  • Testosterone is poisonous

[Read the article: Which Republican candidate is más macho?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Too much of it can kill ya. Too much machismo can do in a country. Bush and Cheney are walking cases in point. We don't need more of it. Maybe it's time to vote for people who are gifted with a combination of sensitivity and vigor. If I were a Republican (shudder at the thought), I'd be talking up Huckabee.

  • What's to stop him?

[Read the article: My husband is groping my sister]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

What's to stop him from groping her kids or even raping them in an alcoholic stupor and then claiming diminished capacity? I am trying to channel Dr. Phil and I think he keeps harping on the way something is affecting the kids. Adults can mess up each other as much as they want but keep away from the kids. Another of Dr. Phil's maxims: It changes who the kids are. The first responsibility of this woman is to her children and, given his hypersexuality when boozed up, I would advise her to file for a legal separation until he spends serious time in rehab. Losing everything -- or the real danger of losing everything -- might wake him up. Might. Not sure but might.

  • Good

[Read the article: No promotion for FEMA faker]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I would like to see him not only unemployable but also lampooned on Leno, Letterman and Saturday Night Live by name.

  • Independence

[Read the article: I can't believe it's not torture, continued]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

If Mukasey cannot be honest about this, he should not be confirmed. If he says it's not torture, he can be educated. If he says it is torture, that's fine. But if he cannot say one way or the other, how can he be expected to take a consistent stand vis a vis something the White House wants that violates both the Constitution and human decency abhor? We need someone who has a center, who has values. His ties to Giuliani are already discouraging and I can't see anything that mitigates the connection.

  • New Conservatism?

[Read the article: Is a new conservatism possible?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

There is no need for a "new" conservatism. What is needed is to find the way back to a pre-Bush, pre-Reagan Conservatism like that of Barry Goldwater and William F. Buckley. I am a liberal and I think liberalism nees a healthy conservative movement to be a kind of counterbalance to its tendency to soar off into the ozone. The current movement, with its hangers on of neocons and theological wingnuts, is profoundly sick. It has lost its fiscal balance and it has lost its sensibly libertarian refusal to interfere with the bedroom behavior of ordinary Americans. Its obsession with goings on in what ought to remain private, its sour obsession with homosexuality and abortion, its refusal to grant the good intentions of those who disagree -- all are serious indications of an almost mortal pathology. Conservatism is dead and maybe, like a Phoenix, it is going to have to rise from its own ashes.

  • Podhoretz

[Read the article: Hitlers, Hitlers and more Hitlers]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Podhoretz is poisonous and he is looking to destroy more than he can ever create. He is Giuliani's best advertisment to vote for Hillary Clinton -- along with Rudy's grandiosity and paranoia, of course.

  • Huh?

[Read the article: Karen Hughes, mission accomplished]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

She was another Bush disaster, a Peter who rose to the level of her own incompetence propelled by a boss who has done the same. She allowed herself to be used and therefore is culpable but I can't help feeling sorry for her.

  • Awww, c'mon

[Read the article: How Oprah ruined the marathon]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Nova last week had a program about a group of 12 people who were basically sedentary but, with training and careful assessment by exercise physiologists, ran and finished the marathon. They weren't elite runners at all but each of them had motive and support.

The marathon is like a horizon. You don't expect to make it to the horizon when you start but you start with a goal to be the best physical specimen you can be. Even if you take six hours to run it, the benefits stay with you all your life.

  • Paranoia

[Read the article: Cheney in the bubble]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

The good thing about paranoia is that it is self-validating. It asks nothing of others because it assumes that it is correct and needs no corroboration. The paranoid person climbs into an interpretation of reality that is consistent and unbreakable. Cheney has gone over the edge. Unfortunately, Captain Queeg is our VP.

  • Condoms recommended

[Read the article: Welcome to the 700 Club, Rudy]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I hope Rudy realizes that he is sleeping with a man who has had well paid relations with Mobotu, Charles Taylor and Efrain Rios-Montt, three of the nastiest dictators of the 20th century. He is thus liable to catch whatever Pat is carrying.

Not that I worry about Rudy because he is sufficiently crass to survive. He is willing to embrace the man who justified the attacks of September 11th by agreeing with the late and unlamented Jerry Falwell that God withdrew his protection from New York, He is willing to rub acid in the wounds suffered by the relatives of the 343 firefighters that he literally murdered by giving them dysfunctional radios.

Both men are disgusting in their own way.

    Karen

  • Two birds of one feather

[Read the article: Rudy's new best friend]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Rudy is a sick man himself. He is completely over the top, consumed by his own ambition and his nagging doubts about himself, bathed in flopsweat until he reeks of it. Robertosn is an over-the-hill spent force showing dementia. Givent he number of corrupt dicators he has embraced, why should Rudy be different? He is as corrupt in his own way as was Mobutu, as fake in his spirituality as Charles Taylor and as potentially lethal to minorities as Efrain Rios-Montt, all of whom Pat embraced for money and favors. Two whores sticking together? Who woulda thought it?

  • Torture is wrong

[Read the article: Jonah Goldberg's deeply "conflicted" thoughts on war and torture]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Why are people "deeply conflicted" about a horrible abuse our our species? What is the big deal? If torture is wrong, it's wrong. If it's okay, why be ambivalent about it? It was wrong during the Inquisition, during the Salem witch trials, at Buchenwald. It is wrong at Gitmo and it is wrong in any of the sites to which victims are taken under rendition. It is wrong if the victim is a Jew or a Muslim. You can't have it both ways.
