Almost all the New York Jews I know, including the ones who are most concerned for Israel's survival, consider Lieberman pond scum. His association with Hagee makes us want to vomit. He is worse for Israel than Hamas because Hamas, at least, doesn't pretend to be a friend of Israel.
When J Street started (a politically moderate Pro-Israel movement that doesn't condemn AIPAC or Zionists of America), I joined up right away because I am horrified by the Christian Zionists like Hagee. Hagee hates Jews and expects Jesus to come back and slaughter us if we don't reject Judaism. This piece of garbage is compared to Moses by Lieberman.
Lieberman is out for Lieberman. Right now he is in an almost death-like embrace of McCain. He went to Colombia with him. Why??? Lieberman is trash-talking Obama? A lot of us could do the kind of job on Lieberman that would leave him lying on the floor in fetal position sucking his thumb and whining for his mama. I can't wait for the expanded Democratic majority in the Senate that will be able to strip Lieberman of all his committees and leave him rattling around like the dessicated object he is only without power.
You cannot expect sensitivity to rights from this administration. They have taped a copy of the Constitution on the backsplash of the executive urinal in the Oval Office and Bush uses it as target practice.
We are in the grips of a (hopefully temporary) fascist dictatorship imposed on us by a 5-4 decision by the Supreme Court eight years ago, cemented by our own terror by Osama bin Laden and continued by the passivity of the U S Congress.
When this is over, the next POTUS, who will probably be a Constitutional lawyer and professor, will have to purge the elements of the dictatorship and put the foundational document back in the center of our government. In the next eight years, it is hoped that Scalia will get a painful but not fatal illness and have to retire along with Thomas. I'm not hopeful about Alito and Roberts, both of whom are depressingly young and vigorous. In any case, the President can name other constitutional experts to the court.
This administration has been a long nightmare, the government of an imbecile run by a bastard. It is time for it to end. I think Musims have a right to live unmolested just as I have a right as a Jew. If a Muslim commits a crime, he or she also has the right to a fair trial under the 232 year old precedents set up by the Constitution that has been the object of Presidential micturation for all these years.
We can't stop Bush from pardoning people but that pardon only covers past acts. It doesn't cover purjury when the people who perpetrated the outrages, both administratively and actively, are called in front of the Congress to testify as to what went on. It doesn't cover contempt of Congress if they refuse to testify. The President (one hopes a Constitutional scholar) can convene the hearings and lend it the prestige of the Presidency by attending the first session.
In fact, the project is nothing less than the restoration of the prestige of the Presidency after eight years of the regime of an imbecile backed up by a major league bastard. It will be delightful to see Cheney grilled.
They are pretending to do their job in the manner of minor bureaucrats everywhere. They do not have the power to make the pilot's life easier but they do have the power to make it more difficult by blindly following rules they don't understand. I believe their lives are so limited that they have ceased comprehending those lives. Sartre used the term "empty" to describe them.
As to the safety issue, we will never be safe so long as we persist in a foreign policy that leaves us occupying foreign lands and torturing people. We will never be safe so long as we are the werewolves of the world. We need to focus on what we are doing and on repairing our approach. We will go on being divided and dividing them. The hassles the writer experienced are a symptom of a disorder caused by our current incompetent administration. Some airport safety people trying to pretend to be competent are just symptoms of a greater malaise.
If I had known that I was voting for a fascist dictatorship when I went to the polls in 2000, I would have frozen in my tracks. I voted for Gore but the Supreme Court, a right-wing cabal and one other, nullified what I thought and installed as corrupt and evil a bunch as we have ever seen. They have installed the Constitution in the executive john of the Oval Office to play aiming games. They have left me vulnerable to both attacks and cynicism.
We have got to get rid of them, sure, but more importantly, we have to air what happened. We need a Truth and Reconciliation Commission like that Desmond Tutu presided over in South Africa. It is likely the President will pardon the worst of the malefactors but that pardon, as I have heard, only refers to past crimes. It does not cover perjury or contempt of Congress so lying and refusing to testify and thus cheating the American people of the knowledge we need will send people to prison, even if not for the crimes they committed.
Nuremburg led to the final negation of "I was only following orders" as a defense. We need to make that statement here, too. No hiding. No lying. No pretending that words don't mean what we think they mean. We need light. We need truth. We need reality.
