  • NWA is not AWFUL!!!!

[Read the article: Who gets to use the N word?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Anyone who knows NWA - particularly Straight Outta Compton, knows, perhaps, the most subversive musicians of the last 20 years:

Fuck the Police coming straight from the Underground -

a young nigga got it bad - cause I'm brown!

And not the other color 'cause police think -

they have the authority to KILL a minority!

Fuck that shit cause I ain't the one -

for a dumb motherfucker with a badge and gun

to be beatin' on - and thrown in jail -we can toe 2 toe

in the middle of the cell...

Fuckin with me cuz I'm a teenager

With a little bit of gold and a pager

Searchin my car, lookin for the product

Thinkin every nigga is sellin narcotics

I heard this when I was 25 - and to this day I can recite most of the lyrics on the record - very very impactful, disturbing and powerful!

  • babyGrumpus -

[Read the article: Who gets to use the N word?]

" It wasn't "black leadership" calling rap "the CNN of the Ghetto," it was Chuck D of Public Enemy who said that (while, you know, PROMOTING his RECORDS). Much of "black leadership" in the '80s and early '90s was split on hip-hop culture and what it represented - reflecting the wider generational split between the civil rights generation and the hip hop generation."

Guess what, Grumpus, just because you try to end a conversation by yelling "racist," it don't mean shit - people like you have stripped it of all meaning - sort of like the word nigger.

You may want to deny that the place that Rap took at the black leadership table in the 80s and 90s - the Sharptons and the Jacksons and the Farrakhans were stumbling all over each other to meet with and get photos taken with rap artists. That you deny it, either proves you're young, a fool or a liar...

    racist!

  • re: Thirty million may sound like a lot of dough, but for perspective, know that March of Dimes telethons conducted in the mid 1980s raised $60 million or more with fewer celebrities on lower rated channels

  • re: merely that the Christianists virtually flushed the entire incident down the memory hole once they learned that this reviled, rampaging "monster" was in fact one of their own.

But not because he was a Christian - gunners who go off the deep end scare gunners who don't - and the gunners who don't are VERY WORRIED that the gun grabbers gain strength after every massacre - so they try to shut down the conversation.

This was about guns, not religion...

I'm surprised Glenn missed that one...

  • re: the 20th century's greatest artist?

    [Read the article: Remembering Bergman]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I was wondering about that myself. In a century that included Picasso, James Joyce and Duchamp - not to mention Edward Weston and Paul Strand, I'd be hesitant to make any claim for the greatest...

  • Question for everyone

[Read the article: A man's right to choose in Ohio]

If the technology existed to easily transfer a viable fetus to an artificial womb - would there be support for a law protecting the right of the father to have the fetus transfered to his care (completely relieving the woman of all rights and responsibilities concerning that fetus) before a woman aborts? IOW - I realize that the PREGNANCY belongs to the woman - but what about the fetus?

  • Re: What an awesomely vivid manifestation of extreme cultural anxiety over a woman becoming commander in chief!

[Read the article: The Hillary Clinton Nutcracker]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Or a really stupid product that fails in its metaphor. Clinton is not known so much as a nut cracker - which would be great, BTW, but more as an ice cube tray. Unfortunately, for the progressives in the room, Hillary does us no good, except, perhaps, to ward of the worse excesses of the Neo-Con wing of the Warpublican party. Unfortunately, that's about ALL she may be good for and I'm not even sure about that one...

Between Hillary Clinton (and her support for the war and the Patriot Act), do-nothing Nancy Pelosie, and way-over-her-head Condi Rice, three women in the highest reaches of American politics are failing this country - and these are ALL women who bloomed under the golden age of militant, intellectual and political feminism. It's not that they're any WORSE than the men around them - but they sure ain't any better - which points to a MAJOR disappointment and possible failure in looking towards feminism as a realistic model for anything more than campus discussions and coffeehouse romancing.

    I'm so sad...

  • re: As for "The War" well, I hate to drag this out yet again, but it was the Soviets who defeated the Germans, not the Western Allies.

[Read the article: You must remember this]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Why don't you try watching before trotting out what we already know. Burns has been very careful to mention the Soviet advances and suffering that took place. While I agree that the music is manipulative, the footage and the photos are amazing - and Burns has ALSO carefully examined the interment camps and the racism back home - the covers the towns affected by the war. I can't believe how quickly some folks piss on something they've yet to see. And while it was the Soviets that took the brunt of the war, had we not kept the Germans busy in African and Europe, you really don't know how things would've turned out. At least wait until the series ends before coming to conclusions...

Oh no - who will write next weeks "Big Bang Theory", "2 1/2 Men" or the next Hollywood Screen adapatation of a video game! if screen writers are unnapreciated, it might be because they put out shit for product...

That's the smell of middle class white people!

  • LLoyd says: Sounds clever, doesn't it? Get those children to speak the ugly truth that their parents deny! But does this really mean racism is passed down from our mothers? I'm not so convinced.

[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Of course not, Carrol - you're ONLy sure of the study when it passes your political litmus test - then, methodology and all else go out the window - thus, women make 68 cents to every dollar a man makes - long discredited, but still preached by the feminist chorus.

And that's just the TIP of the iceberg.

    Unfortunately, you have no credibility...
