    "Speaking of "grotesque, death-oriented culture"

One big difference might be the metaphor of Christianity vs the actualization of martyrdom that Muslims seem to crave - thus you can find actual video of actual Muslims cutting of actual heads of actual people. You can find videos of actual Muslims parading in their streets waving posters of the Suicide bombers they so admire.

But pretend that the Eucharist and the suicide bomber are the same animal...

  • re: Women seem to be as much at risk of injury and death as men in this war, their lower numbers as a proportion of the military have hidden this truth.

Women represent 8 percent of the military in Iraq. As of 3/20/07 82 women have been killed, 470 servicewomen have been injured. As to the men, 3269 have been killed and 26,188 have been wounded.

That's 2.5 percent as many deaths and under 2 percent as many injuries. If you get different calculations, do tell, but I see far less a risk to women - even based on their relatively low numbers.

  • re: First, you're ignoring the inherent power differential, the ability of an older, more experienced person to intimidate and manipulate a more niave person. This is apparently okay in your book, as long as the teacher gets a piece of fresh meat.

[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Exactly what responsibility does Broadsheet have to the accused, the victim or the truth? This is an editorial blog - a place where people express opinions - and the writers at broadsheet felt the case credible - the only people who have to worry about innocence before proven guilty is the jury (and the NEWS media reporting the case)- the rest of us are free to make up our minds and then change them when more facts become available- anyone here think OJ is innocent?

Enough with going after Broadsheet - can anyone be surprised that a feminist blog sides with the accuser in a gang rape? Life is politics, people - truth is not really that important...

Bill Clinton was accused of rape by Juanita Broderick - she had collaborating witnesses from 20 years earlier - yet she was dismissed as a political enemy and trailer-park trash from THE LEFT - this AFTER the president used a cigar on a 20 year old intern in the White House and paid out Paula Jones for sexual harassment- THIS, after years of feminist musings on power structures and subordinate relationships...

    it's all political

Chief: Gunman kills at least 21 at Virginia Tech

-- (CNN) -- A lone gunman is dead after police said he killed at least 21 people Monday during twin shootings on the Virginia Tech campus -- the worst school shooting incident in U.S. history.

"Some victims were shot in a classroom," university police Chief Wendell Flinchum said during a news conference in Blacksburg.

Police believe there was only one gunman, Flinchum said.

"Today the university was struck with a tragedy that we consider of monumental proportions," said university President Charles Steger. "The university is shocked and indeed horrified." (Map of Blacksburg)

The shootings mark the deadliest school shooting incident in U.S. history, topping attacks at Columbine High School in 1999 and at the University of Texas in 1966.

    Did I say 21! I meant:

BLACKSBURG, Va. — At least 32 people are confirmed dead and at least another 21 are wounded after a shooting at Virginia Tech University Monday morning, law enforcement officials told FOX News.

For years, people have died from weapons purchased easily in Virgina and funneled into gun control towns like NYC - 90 percent of the guns used in crimes here come from out of state - and Bloomberg has sued gun dealers in Virginia and already settled with five - which includes court monitoring.

You're gonna blame the university? That's a gun free zone. Like NYC, the guns came in from off campus - brought in illegally, probably purchased legally in Virginia - though I hear the guy was an exchange student - so he might've got them through a straw purchase - also easy in that state. We've paid the price for Virginia's irresponsibility for years - in New York, now they're paying big-time, down there...

  • Some folks want it both ways

    [Read the article: Killer reflection]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

We see in America - particularly on college campuses, a near obsession with race and ethnicity and culture (in fact, we're told that without critical masses and balances of ethnicities, the dominant culture is cheated of ethnic and cultural perspective) - with an implication that assimilation is not only wrong as an expectation on the dominant culture - but a sellout by the minority culture: we see ethnic clubs and graduations and dining halls and dorms and a devotion to all things cultural, as well as advocacy groups, "safe spaces", undergrad and graduate degrees in ethnic studies - as well as a seeming rejection of mainstream culture - or at least a strong desire to maintain roots to the "old country" as it may be and to fight assimilation - and then - when we get a sensational killer of color, the same folks who maintain that ethnic pride trumps all now look shocked as race and culture and ethnicity take center stage!

    But if he was white?

Remember, expressions of white ethnic pride are often condemned as racist. Whites don't express culture in terms of skin color - they do so in terms of ethnicity - you can bet that if this guy was a Greek or an Italian or a Russian or any particular variety of white - born in the old country nonetheless, there'd be gnashing of teeth amongst those of the community.
