  • This is truly ridiculous.

[Read the article: Former advisor: Obama's Iraq plan "best-case scenario"]

Of course neither candidate can make a precise plan for how to get out of Iraq right now. First of all, they aren't getting out RIGHT NOW. The "promise" part is "I'll leave as soon as possible without making the situation worse for Americans." I wish some actual news would happen already.

All that said, Power is much better outside the campaign, as a commentator.

  • To Really Not Bothered

[Read the article: Views of the race from across the Atlantic]

I have NO idea what Power was thinking. I have been wondering if she was drinking with that Scotsman guy or something. The censors were clearly turned ALL the way off. I do feel sorry for her, getting her tongue caught in the media wringer like that. I can imagine doing something stupid like that myself - which is why I will never, ever be a politician of any kind. At least I already know my own limitations.... Apparently she did not. I thought the Obama campaign handled it very well, though.

  • But what is the solution?

[Read the article: Tucker Carlson unintentionally reveals the role of the American press]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Journalists or their editors will have to agree - a huge majority of them - that they will change. Otherwise, those who choose integrity over the illusion of "access" will continue to be marginalized, while the mainstream access-ories continue to print "anonymous" press releases and "leaked" talking points. I think the blogosphere goes a long way, but the mainstream press still enjoys plenty of legitimacy. And the old digital divide people used to talk about is still very, very real for the people who most need "access" to the truth.

E-mails of the editors are available on the site if you want to call attention to the name-calling. The poster in question has been doing that here for years. Anyway, I'd rather read answers to R-BL and KcM than retorts to a known psychopath. Why don't you ignore him and answer them?

  • @Amity

OMG, you are my hero this morning.

  • I have done it, reluctantly.

[Read the article: Have you ever left your toddler in a car?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Actually, I don't do it anymore, because just the other morning someone backed into my car with my daughter in it while I walked my sons up to the door of their school. I am not afraid of abductions or carjacking (not sure there's ever been one in my state...), but stupid drivers are all around us. My daughter was not hurt, but a slightly stupider driver and she might have been. I don't blame anyone for occasionally stepping away from the car with their child still inside, but I don't plan to do it anymore.

  • I have often wished

[Read the article: Obama's speech on race]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

that I were one of those cynical Gen-Xers who can read through a sermon like this and pass it off as "just a speech." I did try, I swear. But it is just too freakin' good to be cynical about. I think people will be remembering this speech for a long time after Obama is president.

  • son of ...

[Read the article: Obama's speech on race]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"Meanwhile the economy is on it's way to another great depression and violence levels in Iraq are back to their usual carnage levels."

That is exactly what the speech was about. Try reading the text at hand before commenting next time, kay? (Also, you wanted the possessive "its" rather than the contraction "it's.")

  • Clinton's speech on race? WTF?

[Read the article: Clinton "very glad" Obama gave speech]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Listen, anti-Clintonites. I loved Obama's speech and I voted for him and I am a feminist who is disappointed in Clinton for many things. But she is not in a position to give a speech on the profound race wound in America - at least not at the same level. What would such a speech even be about? In a case like this, it is the job of us white folks to listen, not talk. Similarly, I expect Obama to support and uphold the rights of women, but I don't expect him to give stirring speeches about gender relations during this campaign. It is not Clinton's job to give a race speech or even comment on this one beyond what she already said. Give it a freakin' rest.

  • What percentage of the 24 percent

[Read the article: Will Wright hurt Obama's chances?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

also think we will find WMD hidden in Iraq and that dinosaur fossils and space travel are fake? A higher percentage of people think Bush is doing a good job right now. I don't think the poll tells us a whole lot, except that a couple fewer people than I expected are complete imebeciles.

  • Fascinating!

Your inimitable form of comi-tragic analysis. Thanks.

Now, would you mind turning your attention to the rising cost of beer, which my local food co-op attributes to a "world-wide hops shortage"? Has this "shortage" been manufactured by commodities hoarding? I mean, really. Hops is a WEED.

Thanks for the info. I remember 15 or so years ago the coffee prices doubled because of a poor crop, and they never came back down. Time to start growing and brewing my own beer, I suppose.
