[Read the article: A paltry $11 billion profit for Exxon]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

This suggests that we've been using about 10 million bbl/day more than we've produced for at least the past three years. How is this possible?

Also in the report is data on OECD* oil stockpiles, which currently sits at 4,104 million barrels. So yes, we are drawing on our savings account. The US stockpile is shown as 1,662 million barrels at the end of 2007. (There is no data for non OECD countries.)

What happens when the stockpile runs dry? I expect we'll reminisce about the good old days when oil was only $100 a barrel.

*OECD = The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development which consists of "OECD Europe," Canada, Japan, South Korea, the United States, and "Other OECD".

Not terrorism -- just supply and demand.

According to the April 2008 Monthly Energy Review put out by the Energy Information Administration, worldwide oil production for the years 2005-2007 was essentially flat at 73.8, 73.5, and 73.2 Million bb/day while worldwide consumption was at 83.6, 84.8 and 95.6 Mbb/day. Yes, there are reserves that we are dipping into and if you think oil prices are high now, wait until those reserves are depleted.

[Read the article: Supreme Court restores habeas corpus, strikes down key part of Military Commissions Act]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Question: Has there ever been a time in our history where habeas was afforded to alien combatants, captured by our military and held abroad?

Since I believe you are proceeding from a false assumption, I'll ask a clarifying question:

Has there ever been a time in our history (prior to gitmo) where alien combatants, captured by our military were not held as POWs?

As has been pointed out before, one problem with the whole "enemy combatant" thing is that no such animal ever existed before.

  • Letter to the campaign

[Read the article: Obama, telecoms and the Beltway system]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Here is the message I left on the Obama for President "Answer Center"; if I get a response I'll post it.

"As a veteran and a citizen concerned with upholding the Constitution and the Rule of Law, I am deeply troubled by the report that Senator Obama has taped a radio endorsement of Rep. John Barrow of Georgia.

Congressman Barrow has run ads accusing fellow democrats of endorsing a "cut and run" strategy in Iraq; he also co-signed a letter to speaker Pelosi demanding that he (and like minded democrats) be allowed to vote for the Rockefeller/Cheney Senate bill to give warrant-less eavesdropping powers to the President and amnesty to lawbreaking telecoms.

Mr. Barrow's opponent in the primary, Regina Thomas, has come out strongly against warrant-less wiretapping and telecom amnesty. Ms. Thomas's position is change I can believe in.

It appears that Senator Obama approves of the old ways of politics when it comes to keeping incumbent politicians secure, even when they are on the wrong side of an issue that is of grave import to the country.

I will be withholding any support of Sen. Obama until I see clear evidence that he will preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution above all other considerations.

I look forward to your response."

  • My note to the DNC

[Read the article: George Bush's latest powers, courtesy of the Democratic Congress]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

In addition to contacting my Representative I sent the following to the DNC:

"Due to the Steny Hoyer capitulation bill regarding FISA / telco immunity, the money I would have donated to the DNC has instead gone to ACT Blue to create advertisements against this atrocity."

Hit them where it hurts; in the pocketbook.

In '06 I sent money to Jerry McNerney's campaign (he replaced Pombo), I just informed his re-election campaign that the money I intended to send to them went to ACT Blue instead and told them that I would be making note of his vote tomorrow.

Confound it! I need a drink.

  • Pelosi Vs Sheehan -- An opportunity

[Read the article: George Bush's latest powers, courtesy of the Democratic Congress]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

What about getting the coalition that has formed up because of this outrage to do everything we can to get Cindy Sheehan elected in place of Pelosi? Sheehan will be on the ballot in November, and we won't be asking the people of San Francisco to vote for a republican. Cindy managed to get 10% of the primary vote without any outside help, so there are some San Franciscans who are ready to part ways with Pelosi.

I think this would be a better use of the money raised so far, because I don't think taking out advertisements slapping Hoyer on the wrist will have any meaningful effect. It's obvious Hoyer and company know full well that the public is against this, yet they do it anyway.

    Thoughts?

  • How about getting StrangeBedfellows to back Cindy Sheehan

[Read the article: What Nancy Pelosi, Steny Hoyer and Fred Hiatt mean by "bipartisanship"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

While the ad's are great they're really just a wrist slap. Why don't we throw our collective weight behind Cindy? She will be on the ballot against Pelosi and maybe the good people of San Francisco have had enough now.

The money I was going to send to Jerry McNerny is now going to Cindy.

[Read the article: Obama says he supports FISA compromise]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Working to unseat a liberal dem Speaker of the House for working to restore the law is a good example of what is wrong with dems and their own self destructive tendancies.

In Jan '06 speaker Pelosi said that she would not follow the Republican precedent of negotiating bills in secret, then bringing to the floor for a vote without having time for serious debate on the issue, yet she did just that with this bill that eviscerates the 4th amendment and makes a mockery of the rule of law by granting ex post facto immunity to the telcos. At the same time she said that impeachment of the most corrupt administration in the history of USA is off the table.

I'd rather have a raving lunatic as a junior Congresswoman than a industry whore as Speaker.

    I just sent $100 to Cindy's campaign.

    Enjoy your 4th of July.

  • @Thanks for that Michael Maloney

Actually I do know how government works; as junior representative a raving lunatic would not be Speaker and therefore could not do the damage to our Constitution as the political machinations of Mrs. Pelosi just has.
