Straight shooter?? Yeah, right.
[Read the article: The escalation debate]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Is anyone, anywhere surprised by this? From the very start this President has said one thing and done something completely different.

Hey SR
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Which Presidents attended Duke? Off the top of my head I can't think of any, let alone 9 or 10. It is a fine school, though.

Sports are not rational
[Read the article: I'm rooting for the Green Bay Packers in the Super Bowl]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Yes you are being silly and yes you should cheer against the Bears.

I get it when I can, otherwise just make do
[Read the article: Sex, or chocolate?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]To borrow a line from an old "Everybody Loves Raymond" episode, I'm like a sex camel.

This aggression will not stand, man
[Read the article: How can I sell my house with a buffed-out screamer dude next door?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]From the sounds of it your neighbor is being very un-Dude.

Boys vs. Girls Grudge Match
[Read the article: The mating game]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Given the level of vitriol in many of these letters I'm amazed that any relationships ever work out. Lots and lots of free-floating anger out there.

Referees-1, King and Packer-0
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I'm of the opinion that Henderson was giving a hard foul, although I doubt he intended the actual consequences. I say that because it was a VERY awkward and unnatural-looking attempt to block a shot. Any basketball player instinctively extends his arm when trying to block a shot. I've never seen anyone block a shot by leading with his elbow. Personally I think the refs got it right.
As for Billy Packer, it seems he made up his mind instantly and would not admit to the slightest bit of doubt no matter what the replays showed.

This relationship is over
[Read the article: I fooled around while I was away and my boyfriend can't get over it]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]"This relationship is not broken" Are you serious? The goddamn plane has crashed into the mountain!!!
Both the LW and the boyfriend would have a much better chance at happiness by walking away.

If Gen X did kill the rock star...
[Read the article: Did Gen X kill the rock star?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Then I would say it is justifiable homicide.

Move on, literally
[Read the article: So I went a little overboard in my courting -- I'm not a crazy stalker!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Unless you have strong connections to the community I would add my voice to those advising you to move somewhere else. Distance will put some needed perspective on your interaction with this woman that might help you put it all behind. If you stay, any effort you make to prove you are not a stalker will only reinforce her belief that you are, and your vague talk of aggression and fight-or-flight mode sounds rather scary. No way that course of action ends well.

My .02
[Read the article: The definitive 200?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Glaring omissions
1. Dire Straits - "Making Movies" ("Brothers In Arms"?? UGH!)
2. The Smiths - "The Queen Is Dead"
3. Warren Zevon - "Excitable Boy"
4. Billy Bragg - "Workers Playtime"
5. Van Morrison - "Astral Weeks"
6. Jackson Browne - "I'm Alive"
And just to second a couple that have already been mentioned: Pavement - "Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain" ; Graham Parker "Squeezing Out Sparks".
I will give them credit for the selection of Smashing Pumpkins "Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness". Nice choice of an often overlooked gem.

"Reverend" indeed
[Read the article: Sympathy for the devil: Leave Rev. Al alone!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I tend to agree with Mike's line of thinking. Sharpton's behavior was so reprehensible in the Tawana Brawley incident that it pretty much eliminates him from serious contention for, well, anything. And those of you arguing that its just one facet of a complex person, you are technically correct, but its kind of like asking Mrs. Lincoln how she enjoyed the play otherwise.

[Read the article: Sympathy for the devil: Leave Rev. Al alone!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I, for one, do not view the Tawana Brawley case as THE defining event for race relations in this country. But I do view it as a defining event for Al Sharpton's character. Yes it was 20 years ago but the mere passage of time doesn't automatically redeem anyone. That comes from an admission of wrongdoing and an apology, for starters. Sharpton has done neither.

It seems to me...
[Read the article: I'm a princess in love with a troll]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]That if you are inclined to refer to your significant other as hobbit-like or a troll, then your heart is not really in this relationship. Probably best for both to call it quits.

Not just General Motors
[Read the article: The chosen president]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Apparently W did run his businesses on the same principles as his presidency, and you see where those businesses ended up.

My .02
[Read the article: This little piggy]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I know I'm getting into this thing really late (200+ letters) but I thought Heather's take was hilarious. Absolutely classic. As for Mr. Baldwin, I understand his frustration, and if he had stopped at "rude, thoughtless" he would have my support. However, the "pig" remark strikes me as over the line, especially for a near teen girl. The most remarkable thing to me about the whole situation is that Mr. Baldwin is restricted to calling his daughter only at a certain time. Is this correct or did I misinterpret something?

What a Dick
[Read the article: Cheney plays the blame game]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]"a responsible public official has to accept the responsibility for the consequences of what they recommend."
What Cheney knows about being a responsible public official could fit on the head of a pin, leaving ample room for an untold number of dancing angels.

My take
[Read the article: And are you their grandmother?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]My Dad died when I was 34. The last 8 years of his life were a steady downhill slide - 2 hip surgeries, knee surgery, congestive heart failure, and more trips to doctors and more medications than I can possibly recall. My life during all this was largely consumed by trying to take care of him (I say this without resentment).
After he passed away my Mom began her own downhill progression - diabetes, heart problems, back problems, and a stroke. She is now an invalid and totally dependent on her adult children. Again, more trips to doctors and hospitals and more medications than I can possibly recall. Once again my life has largely been consumed by this. I am now 42.
While I cannot and will not deny anyone the right to children, please think long and hard about having kids in your 60's. What I went through in my late 20's and 30's these kids will be going through in their teens and early 20's. I cannot imagine a tougher task for a young adult just beginning to make their way in the world.

Gotta disagree
[Read the article: My brother is no good, and I've had enough!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I have to strongly disagree with Anonymous (first letter) who said that the brother must be mentally ill because "people don't generally turn their lives to shit without a good reason". Many, many people turn their lives to shit because of laziness, or indifference, or bad choices, or out of spite, or for a million other reasons that have little to do with mental illness.
