Original article: How to talk about abortion

kyteflyer

I base that on scientific evidence that each human life from conception is unique individual from the point of conception, a unique creation of God, entitled to all the rights that I enjoy.

You lost me at "God." Can you point out where in any respectable scientific literature the concept of "God" is applied to the creation of a fetus?

If you think that human rights should be endowed at the point of conception (when there is no brain, no concept of individual thought) then you should also have a problem with the tens of thousands of fertilized embryos that are destroyed each year as a by-product of in vitro fertilization, as they either fail to implant, or are destroyed as frozen surplus.

And as a matter of practicality, an embryo or fetus cannot be entitled to "all the rights you enjoy." Do you think embryos should vote? Can they own property? How about get married?

The thing that always impressed me about those who oppose abortion on moral grounds is that they are usually logically inconsistent.

They want to rely on science, but then drag God into the picture.

They want to condemn abortion as murder, but can't quite make the leap to imprisoning doctors and patients.

They think abortion should be prohibited, but maybe not for rape and incest. Don't those embryos deserve to live?

They decry women having abortions, but are strangely silent on the disposal of frozen embryos.

Usually these are the same people who are actively working to keep safe effective birth control away from the people who need it most, birth control that could really help lower the abortion rate.

If you are truly against abortion, the single most effective thing you can do is to make sure your local school system has an up-to-date and robust sexual education program and available contraceptives to those who need them. You are not going to get rid of abortion, but through intelligent action and compassion, you may be able to reduce it significantly.

Something stinks alright...

"Is there anyone onboard who can fly a plane?"

If the answer to that is yes, then passengers are perfectly safe when a pilot dies.

Otherwise, I am sure that at least a dozen passengers have used flight simulator software and could fake a landing.

I used to produce flight simulator entertainment software in a former career. I think you vastly overestimate the actual training value of one gets in playing around with an entertainment simulator. I've "flown" many of them, and the issues that you would have to deal with in a real life emergency (fuel management, radio communication, intricate flight subsystems and avionics, etc.) are usually not represented in a sim in a realistic way - or at all.

I would feel no more capable of landing a modern commercial jet than the guy in the next seat.

Please don't open your mouth if you have no idea what you are talking about.

She explained it fully and simply. She wanted to be governor for a reason and it was not to be spending the states money on court proceedings caused by the left wing press, who don't have to answer for their false accusations. lIKE SHE SAID IF YOU ARE THE STAR BASKETBALL PLAYER AND YOU HAVE THE BALL, YOUR EYES ARE ON THE BASKET, AND THE TEAM IS WHAT COUNTS, SO IF THE OTHER TEAM HAS ALL THEIR MEN SURROUNDING YOU THE BEST THING TO DO IS TO PASS THE BALL TO SOMEONE ELSE WHO'S OPEN TO MAKE THE BASKET. Every accusation has been proven to be false so far, but the state has spent 2 million of their coffers and she has another 1/2 million of her own to pay.

Firstly, the "left wing" press didn't cause Palin's legal problems; those complaints were filed by her own constituents in Alaska.

Secondly, Alaska has a state budget of about $13 billion. The $2 million spent on Palin's legal woes is about 1/6500th of the state budget. Why on earth would anybody quit their job as state governor over that?

Thirdly, this is state government, not a basketball team. Palin doesn't work for the "team"; she works for her constituents, e.g. the people of Alaska. The idiot reduction of every situation to a sports metaphor is truly repellent, but I guess it's needed for people like you who can't actually fathom what's going on without it being explained in Sesame Street language.

Finally, here's a little clue about that button marked "caps lock" on your keyboard. When you punch that baby while making a post, everybody who has to read your drivel automatically knows you are part of the 'spittle on the monitor' crowd. There's kleenex in the bathroom. Don't forget to wipe up.

LeftWing Nuts See Something Sinister in her Resignation.....because they can't comprehend that she's not the calculating politician they're accustomed to

Yeah, and Mark Sanford really was out hiking, Larry Craig was just tapping his foot in a public bathroom, Mark Foley just liked to IM sweet kids, and David Vitter was just wearing Huggies for for the fun of it.

Preview Of Coming Attractions

The government that can't keep track of our honoured dead is not qualified to manage health care.

I am always amazed at statements like this. If you think the government can't run a cemetary, then why, for the love of god, would you trust the government to run the entire military defense program. And worse, when someone points out faults or questions our military policy, you are the first to scream, "you're not supporting the troops!"

I guess the government is totally incompetent with everything except running multi-billion dollar defense contracts and deploying hundreds of thousand of soldiers across the world.
