As an atheist
[Read the article: Base instincts]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]who only worships the 1st Amendment (hell of a lot more useful then worshiping the "Invisible Cloud Being", thanks BartCop), I stand by no person in defense of free speech and press.
But I think a more useful analogy would be why Deborah Lipstadt, author of Denying the Holocaust: The Growing Assault on Truth and Memory, refused to either debate or acknowledge the validity of Holocaust deniers like David Irving and his followers:
"The Holocaust deniers take deconstructionism and historical relativism to its most absurd extreme. Once one moves into the realm of denial, one is off the chart of responsible historians. No responsible historian would say there were no gas chambers. One should not take the deniers seriously, because it accords them an undeserved status. That is why I have always refused to debate with them."
One charming interviewer told her “Ms. Lipstadt, I do not agree with these people, but they deserve equal time…”
No, that is the point. They no sooner deserve equal time then members of the Flat Earth Society or someone who thinks that JFK was not killed in 1963 and that prior to the Civil war there was no Slavery in America. These are facts.
Now the evidence that OJ Simpson butchered Nichole and Mr. Goldman is so overwhelming that only a Holocaust denier or perhaps the Jury in the OJ or Rodney King trial would say he did not do it.
Mr. Simpson does not deserve to be taken seriously. And the Fox affiliates voted with their wallet. If Simpson wants to write any books, nobody is stopping him. He does however have to do it on his own nickel.

I wonder
[Read the article: John Bolton, or Bush's bad bet]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]what it would be like when a 60 year old Adult with the emotional maturity of a spoiled 10 year old is finally told NO.
For the last six years, the only restraint shown by George Bush is shame or fear. He has literally behaved as a rich kid who could do anything. His parents, figuratively speaking Congress and the News Media, have pretty much indulged his every whim.
The only time he stopped misbehaving, e.g. releasing Joe Padilla from a military into a Federal Prison, is when other adults like the Supremes threaten to take away his privileges (The right to imprison anyone he does not like), or images like Katrina shame him into action. A spoiled 10 year old.
But a 10 year old with the power of the Presidency and the support of the military who has never grown up. And now it looks like Congress is going to tell him NO a helluva lot more times in the next 2 years. What would a Presidential temper tantrum look like? Scary to think about.

'Bush bash',
[Read the article: If Bush isn't "troubled," shouldn't the rest of us be?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Mr. Browne. Excuse me, please explain why is Mr. Grieve's article bashing Bush?
Did Mr. Grieve's lie or exaggerate? Are any of the following statements false?
-His party just lost big during midterm elections -His approval ratings are stuck in the 30s -His nominee for the job of ambassador to the United Nations just gave up any hope of confirmation -The war of choice Bush started in Iraq has now claimed the lives of 2,906 American soldiers
Just because President Bush does not choose to live in a reality based community outside of his bubble does not give him the right to demand others share in the fantasy.
And stenographers like Mr. Hume who choose to simply report with out question what the President says, no matter how egregious his statements, are worthy of nothing but contempt.

I seem to recall
[Read the article: The Democrats' war on families?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]a quote by some Republican operative, I do not know which one, shortly after the elections of 2004. Considering how their was talk of Democrat disarray and a Permanent Republican Majority, I find this quote somewhat ironic 2 years latter.
This is what my Republican friend said:
“George Bush will win a second Presidential term in 2004. As a result of this, the Republicans will be the minority Party in Congress for the next 20 years.".

Mr. Anonymous
[Read the article: What Mary Cheney should expect while she's expecting]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]you are dancing on the fence. What this article points out in a humorous way is the hypocrisy of a Republican operative, any Republican operative that aids and abets an organization that wishes to take away their legal rights.

MOORE: The fact that there are gay Republicans? Is that a crime?
MAHER: No, but they made—
FRANK: It would be if the Republicans had their way. [laughter] [applause] [cheers] Excuse me, I mean that literally. Excuse me. Saying – intimacy – physical intimacy – between people of the same sex was a crime in the state of Texas. Governor George Bush said it should remain a crime.
MAHER: Yeah.
FRANK: The United States Supreme Court said, “No. Intimacy between consenting adults of the same sex should not be a crime.” Scalia dissented; he got very angry. Thomas dissented. Rehnquist dissented. My guess is Roberts and Alioto are now on that side. As a matter of fact, if John Paul Stevens, who is 85, leaves the court for some reason, and I hope obviously not, and George Bush gets to make another appointment, you will get a five-member majority that would reverse that. So, in fact, the Republicans did believe that this was a crime.
And thus is the dilemma poor Mary Cheney is facing. Force to choose between her Father’s love and the organization he works for (Republican Party) whose members wish to throw her and her partner in jail (or even stone her to death); she went more then a little crazy. She wrote a book denouncing everybody, from John Kerry on down, because she could not deal, could not accept the truth with out going mad.
THE CORE BASE OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY CONSIDERS HER RELATIONSHIP WITH HER PARTNER AN ABOMINATION.
She is to be pitied.
