Commander Ogg
[Read the article: Beyond the Multiplex]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]First off, I have not seen the film, I only read the reviews. But there is a wealth of information on Christian Reconstructionism and Dominionism, from Fred Clarkson’s "Eternal Hostility" to the latest post on the yuricareport.com (American Vision's "Worldview Super Conference 2006").
The outcry against this film from the Dominionist is the same tune heard when anyone attempts to expose their political strategy to the light of day. The Rev. Ted Haggard, known to his congregants as Pastor Ted, is currently the head of the National Association of Evangelicals and the founder/head of the Association of Life-Giving Churches. Pastor Ted is also in contact with the White House once a week to discuss the politics of the far right.
Now you would think that as a tax exempt 501(c) (3) organization, they can not get involved in politics, but this only works if the law is enforced. And the ultimate goal of Pastor Ted and his fellow god men, whether anyone chooses to believe it, is to overthrow the Democratic government of the United States and replace it with a theocracy based on their interpretation of the Old Testament.
So when any group attempts to talk about them in book or film no matter how "fair and balanced"; the god men go nuts. The last thing these theocrats want is to have their strategy and tactics exposed to the light of day.

Enough already
[Read the article: Battling Democrats' indifference]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Okay Mr. Glen, let us cut thru the fertilizer. I see a disturbing trend here, one that constantly comes up during the elections: the Democrats are silent; they have no message, Blah, Blah, Blah, when we all know that what ever the Democrats say or do, the Lapdog press will not cover it. It does not matter.
You know, we have been through this a hundred times and still you do not get it, the Corporate Media Whores that provide 90% of the information flow will not ever, ever give the Democrats an even break. Don’t you read Media Matters for America?
Lauer failed to ask McCain about "signing statement" that marred his previous bill on detainee treatment
Blitzer again failed to note Bush's contradictory statements on U.S. military action in Pakistan
Cavuto cherry-picked poll data to claim Americans not in Democrats' "cut-and-run camp"
Summary: Joe Scarborough claimed "all Republicans are winners" because of a debate that has split the Republican Party over President Bush's plan to redefine the Geneva Conventions. However, Scarborough previously saw differences within the Democratic Party over Iraq policy as potentially problematic
After 10 days of no progressives or Democrats on CBS' "Free Speech," segment featured the Wash. Post's Eugene Robinson
The list goes on an on. We have to fight both the R’s and the MSN and the noise machine. And when we do put out a statement or a proposal, the gosh darn media whores twist it three ways to Sunday.
Sorry Mr. Glen, the game is as rigged as the Path to 9/11. If the D’s actually regain control of one or both houses, it will be the biggest miracle since the Mets in 69. And if they fail, it most certainly will not be because the Democrats are silent, but because they have been silenced.

Self Haters
[Read the article: Foley pushed child porn bills, asked: "Do I make you a little horny?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Frequently among those that hate another individual for something as stupid as skin color, or religion, or sexual orientation, IMHO the worst of the worst are those who turn out to be the very people they attack. Malken and WWII Japanese detainees, George (Macaca) Allen and Jews, and finally Mr. Foley.
Are they trying to purge themselves of something they can not control? Is it a case of by hook or crook, out damn spot? Who can say.
I pity them however, even Mr. Foley. If only people would worry about whats really important.

But can he maintain?
[Read the article: Dude, where's my cross?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]As with most individuals that wear the cross/crescent/star on their sleeve and use religion as a weapon, Mr. Baldwin will find that virtue is fine, if you’re a saint. Most of us, indeed all of us however are merely mortals, human beings with all our frailties and weaknesses (Mr. Fred Rogers came darn close to Sainthood, but even he must have had a few sins. Or maybe not.).
Whether thy name be Swaggart, Bennet, Delay, or Foley, mortals have their weaknesses and frailties, and in the age of the portable recorder, the info net and the You-tube, odds favor that those frailties will make the 6 O’clock news, given enough time and persistence.
For now Mr. Baldwin has his flock. Let him hope that this is real, for Sainthood is a most peculiar thing, and since he set himself up high, he dare not fall. Too often comes to mind those words by Billy Joel:
I would rather laugh with the sinners then cry with the Saints, the sinners are a lot more fun…
Some how I do not believe that a former drug user has given up his fun.

White House Correspondents' Dinner
[Read the article: Whose state of denial?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Stephen Colbert describes Mr. Woodwards style to a t:
Over the last five years you people were so good -- over tax cuts, WMD intelligence, the effect of global warming. We Americans didn't want to know, and you had the courtesy not to try to find out. Those were good times, as far as we knew.
But, listen, let's review the rules. Here's how it works: the president makes decisions. He's the Decider. The press secretary announces those decisions, and you people of the press type those decisions down. Make, announce, type. Just put 'em through a spell check and go home. Get to know your family again. Make love to your wife. Write that novel you got kicking around in your head. You know, the one about the intrepid Washington reporter with the courage to stand up to the administration. You know - fiction!
Mr. Blumenthal correctly points out that this style has not changed. No contrast, no questions, no fact checking. 100% stenography.
