Deja Vu
[Read the article: The real war on Christmas]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]It happened to me as well Mr. Wheaton. My Dad was a liberal Democrat who voted for Kennedy, collage educated, that gradually mutated into a conservaclone after he went bankrupt at 62.
We live in seperate states and keep in touch by phone. I tried to be civilized even though I knew he was madder then a March Hare, tip toeing around subjects that we did not agree on, but no go. It was like he was determined to start a fight. One day he accused me of insulting his god when I told my younger brother exactly what I thought of the "Promise Keepers". My old man also tried to treat me like a child, and I had it, then and there. I told him in no uncertain terms what he could do with his conservative, homophobic, paranoid BS. It was a non stop shouting match for a half hour that accomplished nothing.
We still talk, but not much beyond hello and how are you. My dad does not have cable, so his only TV is over the spectrum, usually of the religious variety. When he gets a chance to look at cable at my sister’s house, it is all Fox News all the time. I normally am not a vengeful person, but if somebody wanted to give me a nice Hanukkah present, they would flush O'Reilly and other right-wingers done the nearest sewer treatment plant.

And yet, he is the President
[Read the article: George W. Bush on the lessons learned in Iraq]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]The President of the United States of America. Think, I mean really think about it. The disjointed ramblings coming out of the mouth of GW Bush are not the pronouncements of some third world dictator or wanna be militia wingnut. This man has real power to affect real lives, including the ability to launch nuclear weapons (http://www.newyorker.com/fact/content/articles/060417fa_fact).
Progressives have been screaming for the last 5 years to a tone deaf media that Bush is exactly as he appears to be. He is an individual who is functionally illiterate, with a substandard IQ but a high degree of charm and cunning. A Calvinistic theocrat afflicted with the Jerusalem Syndrome (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerusalem_syndrome), who really believes that he is on a Holy mission to rid the world of “evil”, an never mind the consequences. What you see is what you get.

She was not the first to write about this
[Read the article: "Kingdom Coming: The Rise of Christian Nationalism"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]In 1996, Fredrick Clarkson published "Eternal Hostility: The Struggle between Theocracy and Democracy", in which he outlined the rise of Dominionism and the attempt to overthrow our Democratic Government. That was almost 10 years ago, and a quick check of his predictions would show that he was right more then he was wrong.
With the election of our Calvinist friend Bush in 2004, the Dominionist in Congress felt embolden enough to reintroduce the Constitution Restoration Act of 2005 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constitution_Restoration_Act).
This Bill was not a joke, a conspiracy, or a paranoid delusion, but an actual piece of legislation introduced by two members of Congress. It would forbid the Judiciary from interfering with any decisions made by an agent of the Government who “acknowledged of God as the sovereign source of law, liberty, or government”. Any Judge who attempts to overthrow such a decision as unconstitutional could be impeached.
The biggest setback for the Dominionist was overplaying their hand in le’ affaire de Schiavo; which turned into a wakeup call for the nation on what would happen if these Reconstructionist took power. Above all it must be constantly stressed that this is a political movement, with its own political party: http://www.constitutionparty.com/, whose stated goal is to: Restore our government to its Constitutional limits and our law to its Biblical foundations

[Read more letters about this article: Here]Blackwell gets brunt of registrants' anger. He denies trying to disenfranchise voters

Ted Wendling
Plain Dealer Bureau
The above is the headline for todays Cleveland Plain Dealer (June 6 2006)

I'm sorry Ms. Walsh, Mr. Manjoo. Tinfoil hats, conspiracy nuts, drink the Koolaid, laugh like hell. But it is not a joke, not even a bad one.
Mr. Blackwell is using every means, fair or foul, to keep minorities (read Democrats) from voting, just like he did in 2004. If you believe otherwise, your smoking, and it is not tobacco.

The mentality of Israel
[Read the article: Lebanon pays for Hezbollah's sins]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Being Jewish, I will admit to a conflict of interest in this present situation.
Frequently stated is the question does "Israel have a right to exist?” This is along the same lines as the "question" about evolution. In both cases it is not question. Evolution is a fact. Israel is a fact. Get use to it, or not, it does not matter.
Does Israel threaten to invade any of its neighbors? Heck no. Israel was founded in the aftermath of the Holocaust, when the nations of the world briefly developed a collective sense of shame. They gave the Jewish refugees a patch of dirt no bigger the Kern County, California (the areas are similar) and decided that this would be enough to ease their conscience after the sh-tty way they treated Jews who were attempting to flee Nazi genocide. Surprising just about everybody (including me), the founding members of Israel turned this Desert Hell into one of the most prosperous Countries in the Middle East.
Thus is the mentality of Israel, us and them. When Jews were being slaughtered, the World did nothing. Israel’s response to the World: Go Cheney yourself! They truly believe that given a chance, most of the Arabs and a large portion of the Europeans would love to see Israel Juden Frei (Look it up). They trust no one, even allies like the United States.
If the Iranian Mullahs and their Hezbollah lackeys do not believe that the Israelis will burn anybody that threatens their existence, they are crazy. From the Israeli perspective, they have nothing to lose. The Israelis do not care about World opinion. They care about Survival.
