"It is my responsibility to take care of the health of my family and for myself. It is my responsibility to find a new job if I lose one, to rebuild my house if it blows down. It is my responsibility to pay my mortgage on time and read the small print when I sign something. I take personal responsibility for my actions, for my successes and failures."
That's great Margot, but there are some who are UNABLE to. Rolling back the clock to 1900 is hardly the answer, I'm afraid. We have progressed as a country since that time because we believe in some kind of government role in the well being of its citizens. Teddy Roosevelt had to do some about the tainted meat -- the rats which were ground in with our beef -- and offered some sweeping reforms regulating the food industry. How is this different than the current financial collapse? What we have witnessed is a total breakdown of finance. This sector has not the ability nor will to fix itself. I wish it was true that we could apply your ideas of personal responsibility to the financial industry -- hey, they got us into this mess, how about some "personal responsibility" to get us out of it? Unfortunately it doesn't quite work that way. The government is the only answer at this point. Please try not to fool yourself on this point and see reality for what it is from this time forward.
Wow, how insignificant.
Glenn -- I enjoyed you and Jay on Bill Moyers Journal last week. Keep it up!

Suck it up, bitch.
Everyone's calling it for Obama (except for PBS, who is waiting for the polls to close). Sarah Palin will not be introducing, or even appearing with, John McCain tonight. Wow.
The Gambler says that McCain should fold.

As you spread your unfounded lies, fear, and hate, I ask you to look inside yourself and wonder where it comes from. Your claims have been shown false, weak at best, and you have not been able to connect the dots. Why then do you still believe what you believe? Take a look at the fire inside you and ask yourself what you are really angry about. If you find it, question it. Is it logical?
Let's remember the words of Master Yoda who, a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, uttered these great words: "Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering."
Didn't Obama come clean about this 12 years ago when his memoirs came out? What's the problem?
Let the socialism rain!
Dear Republicans,
Guess what? You lose. Led by your man "W", you were handed over the country for 8 years. In the last eight years you have brought senselessness to government while just about destroying our economy in the process. Now you must step aside. Do us a favor, as you've already done enough, and realize that there's nothing in your hand and it's best you fold.
Sincerely,
ghunt
If they can stir up those age old fears in whites without being guilty of saying anything blatantly racist (i.e. Barack Hussein Obama, "that one", terrorist, Muslim, etc.), they have done what they've set out to do. It's a sick campaign McCain is waging. He can't win on issues so he's going after the man's race and bringing to surface some deep racist feelings in a lot of whites, many of whom don't even realize they harbored those feelings.
I consider myself a moderate, but perhaps leaning slightly to the left on social issues. This article by Greenwald exposes Fox News for what it is -- an annoying propaganda machine. This isn't news. At best it's an infomercial trying to sell you something regardless of how outrageous and unfounded the claims are.
I listen to NPR and read a variety of articles from news sources such as the NY Times, Washington Post, CNN, Slate, and Salon. When I witness "news" like the kind which was shown in this article, it really makes me glad that I don't own a television. I'm not sure what else I can say other than that Hannity program is simply garbage.
Thanks Glenn - keep up the great writing.
How does John McCain's government buy up of the troubled mortgages - the plan he briefly mentioned tonight - jibe with his spending freeze he keeps talking about?
Yeah, looking forward to Tim Conway on SNL this weekend.
McCain let himself and his supporters down tonight by failing to aggressively go after Obama. He could not match him on matters of the economy and on national priorities, so he unfortunately wore his signature frowny face during most of the evening. On top of that, McCain very much had a postmortem rigidity going on tonight. I'm beginning to feel bad for him as I realize the stress of the campaign and the polls he wakes up to every morning must really be getting to him.
McCain had very much a postmortem rigidity to him tonight.
Despite the town hall meeting style debate favoring McCain, Obama clearly has the upper hand. McCain will have to fight his mounting temper (waking up every morning to the current polls on only 2 1/2 hours sleep per night has got to weigh heavy by this time) while voters begin to make decisions. In fact, decisions are solidifying and many people have even already voted. Tonight, I'd watch McCain's stress level as he's forced to address the economy.
