This Modern World

Setting my time machine ahead six years to 2009, I found I'd landed in a world gone mad!

The letters thread is now closed.

Funny

Funny as usual. Tom Tomorrow is the greatest cartoon around.

Photographs as Backgrounds

I've noticed that for the second week in a row, "This Modern World" has PHOTOGRAPHS as backgrounds. I like that effect.

More importantly, the cartoon itself is as witty and incisive as ever, and that's what really matters.

Eheheh...

Does the protagonist look suspiciously like Thomas Friedman--or am I just imagining things?

Monday, May 25, 2009 09:44 PM

Yes, they are photos in the background

and it looks like San Francisco. Is Mr. Tomorrow getting lonesome for The City again?

Love Wellsian time machine, though sorry the protagonist got stuck in the wrong time. I was going to say that next time he should use a TARDIS but I don't think that would solve any of his problems.

who keeps telling this guy he's funny?

Tuesday, May 26, 2009 08:26 AM

Dirdum, didn't you read the first two letters?

"who keeps telling this guy he's funny?"

Uh, cjsm3000 and Perlinator did, about half a day before you posted your letter.

Don't thank me; I'm just glad to be of help.

Yeah but wrong time machine movie...

...you should have had Mr. Wells chasing Jack the Ripper and cornering him at GOP headquarters...

@deering

Good observation, that hadn't occured to me.

Tuesday, May 26, 2009 01:16 PM

Surely he was mistaken!

It must have been the world of 1989 - not 2009 - that he returned to, don't you think?

I mean; that was the year we last got shafted the Father Bush (or should I say Mr. 'Potter'?), The Brothers Bush, and their Evil Overlords, wasn't it?

Or was I the only one expecting yet another Stock Market, Banking Sector, Housing Market 'meltdown/bubble bursting/whatever' (or was that 'Trickle Down')?!?

Putin is betting we'll "implode" by July 4th, 2010; whaddaya think?

best line

"Did I win?"

The Future is Now!

Er, except for the fact that little has really changed, and we still have the same 25% - 35% moron wingnuts to deal with (even if the rest of their party is running from them as if from lepers), and the same corporate fascists are still in charge.

deering

Yes, indeed. And the "Boobs (figurative ones) Abroad" nature of the dialog was quite Friedmanesque.

Tuesday, May 26, 2009 08:33 PM

Hmm, that's a TIME AFTER TIME remake I wouldn't mind seeing...

"...you should have had Mr. Wells chasing Jack the Ripper and cornering him at GOP headquarters..."

...because Jack the Ripper's modern-day identity is Dick Cheney. Works for me...:)
