This Modern World

Mr. Vice President, should Americans be worried about the swine flu?

Truth & zombies

I've always thought the obsession with having a firm, unified, unchanging message often makes things worse (e.g. Bush on Iraq). This administration in particular should take advantage of their opportunity to look like real humans, whose opinions evolve with the information available. I didn't see Biden's interivew but from what I know of the Today Show they were looking for a lowest-common-denominator answer anyway. An alarmist one would be even better.

I dunno what the cartoon Biden is so freaked about though. Zombies are way easier to combat than an airborne contagion, as everybody knows. They are easily outrun (except for British zombies, for some reason) and if they're still coming, just shoot 'em (and anyone they've bitten) in the head. Good practical knowledge.

Tom Tomorrow, WTF????

Are you positioning yourself to become a commentator on Faux News? From what I can discern, VP Biden neither said nor insinuated anything like what is attributed to him in this cartoon. For one thing, the question posed to him was idiotic. But what do you expect from the Today Show? That's pretty much par for the course. But if I were to advise my family on travel to Mexico, or anywhere else for that matter, I would've said something similar. What would you say to your son, daughter, wife, or elderly parent? As a matter of fact, I avoid air travel and confined spaces as much as I can, always have, pandemic or not. Joe Biden seems to be a target for derision because he talks like a human being (not in sound bites) and sometimes says things that may be twisted the wrong way by people with their own agenda. It's not like he scammed the country into preemptive war, outed a CIA agent, or advocated torture. Perspective, please!!!!

@normbreyfogle

And to think

... that I used to believe Biden had a brain. What happened to him once he bacame vice president?

Perhaps zombies ate them?

"Braaaaaaaiiiinnnnsssss....."

Ah, he wasn't that bad...

He just said, something to the effect of...

... Hell, no! I wouldn't be in any closed, confined spaces with the public, right now.

He didn't say a word about avoiding airplanes to Mexico.

Honestly, I found the entire thing a bit funny - not the flu, but Biden and the reaction.

Right on, Joe!

Wouldn't it be nice to live in a world where politicians told you what they really thought? You know, so you'd actually have some information to help you decide if you'd want to vote for someone or not.

Joe is absolutely right, you spend a morning commute rubbing up against the great unwashed, and you're gonna catch something. This is not news. Wash your hands a lot, and you'll be fine.

This modern world

It seems to me, reporters are stuck in a loop, similar to the ones on TV that cause me to change channels! Why do you have to go over the same lines your colleagues have gone over a hundred times. I don't care which party, just be fair and interesting. It's as if you are all on the same feeding line. Get off and be creative, isn't that what you went to school for. You've lost your own goal!

By the way, most of those scared of this flu, felt as our VP felt. It's just more fun to make fun of him. How sad!!!!!

@gzuckier

uh, trueblue

i don't think the point here is to make fun of biden himself....

You don't?

It was making fun of who then, zombies?

Tuesday, May 5, 2009 10:09 AM

Say It Ain't So, Joe? NO!

Laugh if you must - I know that I did - but remember, when Joe Biden said this (less the zombies, of course), people were thinking that the new Factory Farmed Swine Flu was a whole lot more deadly than it looks this week.

I find Vice President Biden's advice a lot more sensible and honest than back in 2001, when the Bushie Boys were contradicting the EPA and all scientific sources, and telling residents and workers around the smoking holes of the World Trade Center that the air was perfectly safe - keep working! Move back into your apartments! You don't need no stinkin' face masks! You don't need to "decontaminate"!

Besides, by now everyone should know that VP Biden runs on hyperbole. Absorb the core of truth from whatever he's saying, enjoy the rest, and get on with your lives.

IF you survive, that is. Heh, heh, heh ...

LOL

This was flat out hilarious. Joe Biden is boldly picking up the mantle of speaking-exactly-what-you're-thinking-the-second-you-think-it-without-any-trace-of-self-censorship from the late, great Hosea Williams. Thank you, Mr. Vice President, for brightening our day during these scary times!

You tell 'em, Joe.

In the same circumstances, I would have given my kids the identical advice. It was reasonable advice, based on solid science. And if it clashed with the party line, the party line should have been modified to accommodate it.

Tuesday, May 5, 2009 06:11 AM

The heck of it is, I actually agree with some of what he said

As long as airlines seal people into airtight cylinders and send them somewhere, you will arrive after breathing everybody else's exhalation, sneezes, burps and farts. And getting introduced to their germs.

TT and most of you are idiots

Matt Lauer asked Joe Biden a question about how he would handle the flu threat, and Biden gave him a truthful, straight forward answer about avoiding the air borne threat.

He didn't do the usual "politician-speak." He answered like any normal person who was being prudent. Now y'all and TT are joining the idiot talking heads and ridiculing him for a truthful answer. He didn't think about "what should I say to protect the travel industry, or to keep people moving on the subway or to cover for any other vested interest that would want people to follow their normal schedule despite any danger."

People complain about slimey, calculated comments from politicians that you can't rely on, and yet almost every time you and others ridicule Biden it's because he's accidently told the truth. Obviously you people can't handle the truth.

Oh what a hilarious scandal! Biden told the truth again! We just can't do anything with him except laugh at what a clown he is!

You people make me tired; and that's the truth.
