This Modern World

The incredible shrinking Republican Party!

The letters thread is now closed.

Shrinking but not gone

Be that as it may -

Yay hooray. The Republicans may have been soundly booted, but if anyone can remember way back to the Clinton era, Limbaugh and the other party favors were given new credibility as "the Voice of the Opposition." While democrats were busy waving their little victory flags, these jokers got noticed - and forced Clinton into being a "deal maker rather than a leader" (Jello Biafra's words). And it didn't even take much to do it - just Limbaugh; the rest got in from his sizeable wake (leave your fat jokes at the door, someone will claim them later).

If Olbermann, Maddow, Matthews and company don't become more watchdog than backslapper, their legitimacy is going to tank. One of Tom's strips nailed it last year: the presidency isn't an Us vs. Them contest, it's a guy filling a job and it's our responsibility to keep both eyes on him.

If we do a better job of "Fair and Balanced" than the rabble-rousers and DIY Chicken Littles on the Internet, they won't have a leg to stand on. But that window of opportunity is rapidly closing.

@rott635

Bzzt! Thanks for playing. I'm not a republican... and if you think the democratic party is uniformly filled with progressives, you are the one in a fantasy world.

Maybe this time

The Republican Party should have never survived the Great Depression. Maybe this time we will drive a stake through the elephant's heart. But don't count on it. Last time, they made their comeback calling people communists. Wonder what it will be this time?

Rich people will always have a party to represent their interests, and there will always be enough dumb people to keep them in power.

@ Poco

*Obama the 'Magic Negro'

*Actual title of an LA TIMES column. You would think that TT would take Bollings advice and GOOGLE it.

Stupid liberal.

What Limbaugh played on his show had nothing to do with the LA Times column or the CNN piece on the same theme, and it was entitled "Barack the Magic Negro," not "Obama..."

Stupid lying sack of... reset... piece of GOP-trailer trash.

@Benthead

they always seemed to be one step ahead of us Dems. But to my shock, the Palin move turned out to be stupid.

You need to realize, almost every republican move was stupid. In some cases, the stupidity became obvious sooner rather than later. While Sarah Palin and Harriot Myers may have looked like stupid moves almost immediately, and the Iraq war took a month to look really stupid, the stupidity was there from the beginning. This is what happens when a politician supports his ideology first, and the American people a distant second (or third or fourth).

What you're seeing is the stupidity no longer working for a majority of the public. Which is why it seems that the GOP is flailing. Until they embrace some kind of intelligence (which, ironically, would alienate a large part of their base), the Republicans are going to look pretty pathetic for some time to come.

awesome strategists

I'm flummoxed. The one thing I used to count on (but lament) was that the Republicans WERE "awesome strategists." Right up to the nomination of Sarah Palin, they always seemed to be one step ahead of us Dems. But to my shock, the Palin move turned out to be stupid. Now they are making risible decisions about how to "position" the party--or just flailing.

I don't quite believe it. Is it a Karl Rove trick?? Are we being suckered??

I suffer from post-Republican Shock Syndrome, and I still feel scared and woozy.

Obama's Has Been Magic!

Give Obama credit for living up to that "magic" adjective! His "sleight of hand" nominations of Geithner and Daschle have uncovered hidden monies!

dear poco

I don't think you understand what's going on. It doesn't matter how much money Limpbah makes in the short term; he's not the target. I believe 'Bama and his advisors are merely taking advantage of the leadership vacuum on the right to herd them all behind the blimp, and thus plaster the blimp's image on the Elephant's ass for a good, long time. Little Hudson's ego is so easily stroked that he's been punked into accepting Barack's "elevation" of him to the position of "leader of the Republican party". If the blimp makes a ton of money off it, all the better. Mush can indeed have "millions of ditto heads" lining up behind him.... 20% of the population. The rest of the country thinks he's nuts and that applies to anyone who takes him seriously. And that's being charitable.

Yes, Poco, I know

I know that in order to defend your previous statement that you hope that Obama fails if he is in fact a socialist, you now have to twist everything he says to support that conclusion. Hell, we saw you guys bang your fists on the table to invade Iraq, we certainly know how this phenomenon works.

The country and the world are so fortunate to have you lot out of power.

paulpsd7 - Youe and your code words!

1) Barack Obama will provide a tax cut for working families

1a) i.e. tax "rebates" for people that don't pay taxes. Gotta "spread the wealth around".

2) Provide tax relief for small businesses and startups

2a) As long as they are minority owned. I've worked for two 8a firms. I know how this one works.

3) Fight for fair trade.

3a) Suck up to the union bosses.
