This Modern World

Karl Rove knows what Republicans need to do in '08.

The letters thread is now closed.

Hell's Liberal is half right

Yes, Hell's Liberal points out an important fact; no miracle has transpired to significantly impact the political shallowness of the average American.

But there are two factors:

One, that Bush's fuckups have motivated the relatively politically aware-but-jaded of voting age to get off their asses. That's a big group.

Also, Bush's fuckups are so severe that common folks' rising awareness of the actual state of things threatens to take a serious bite out of their capacity to be manipulated by emotionally-resonant over-simplifications and fear-mongering.

No, people aren't waking up in a serious way--to suggest otherwise is wishful thinking. But awake people are getting motivated to act on their convictions.

Tomorrow's heart is in the right place.

@schencka, @jfriesne

There is no Republican incumbent in the 2008 presidential race. Sorry, but thanks for the distortion.

"Incumbent"

Renascent - The GOP and its eight years of wrongheaded policies is the incumbent.

To say that America needs change that only the GOP can provide is to quite effectively confess that they were wrong the whole time before now.

Which is a great way to maintain power--on Bizarro World.

Rove as a strategist knows CONFUSION IS his best weapon

So what better way to confuse the angry, hostile, but typically poorly informed American voter than to verbally adopt the Democratic talking points.

It's not a strategy meant to garner outright victory, but rather to prevent overwhelming defeat by either capturing the White House, while Dems. romp to a huge win in Congress, or the opposite, lose the white house while forestalling a congressional sea change.

Just because Rove is an amoral, RepubliTHUG doesn't mean he's an idiot. He can read the polls.

Nothing he can come up with can begin to make the inevitable Democratic victory this fall fail to happen.

It's the Democrats election to win or lose. RepubliTHUGS are on the sidelines hoping for massive miscalculations that give them some wins. All the evil one is doing is trying to up the odds a little, and when it comes to distracting and confusing voters Rove is a master

Rove also has always focused on his core group of supporters, and that core group while demoralized seems as easy to daze and confuse as they ever where.

Of course those that fall for it yet again, and realize after they've been taken for a total idiot once again, will perhaps finally lose faith in his lies, but if his plan to sow confusion works, he won't give a damn.

I love it when Rove talks. Like all egomaniacs, he can't resist mixing in a lot of truth with his attempts to mislead. Everything he says is useful, even if mostly lies. It makes Democratic strategists more info on his strategies, and helps Dems. develop better ways to render it utterly inneffective, and not just rely on voter discontent to deliver victory.

His drawings are always a hoot, but this strip was too obvious, and thus doesn't get the 10/10 I normally give his strips. I still liked it though. ;-)

My fondest wish

Oh, to be a penguin in a cool visor, within spitting distance of Rove, and bitch-slap that fatty boy til he weeps. Verbally of course.

Forgetful Tom

How could you have forgotten about the drug-perscription plan, the biggest new government program in years? But of course, you want a national health service like Britain's. But you are probably rich enough to fly to India for your surgery.

Sparky

Is standing in for every American who wants to grab a conservative (especially THAT conservative) by the lapels and ask him WTF he's been doing for us for the last 7 years.

That was positively cathartic.
