Missing the point
The comic completely misses the point. The problem with Obama's comments were not that they made him look elitist (which it did). Rather, his comments were insulting.
People do not cling to religion and guns because of government inaction. The only people who do that are ultra-right-wing survivalist who form militias in the Montana badlands.
Obama is not elitist. He is just wrong.
And for disclosure, I'm an anti-gun, atheist, registered Democrat, eat-the-rich-liberal New Yorker.

Nicolas Sarkozy may not be the farthest thing from blue collar that you'll find in France, but he's awfully close to it. He was raised by royalty in perhaps the richest town in Paris, just adjacent to Paris, where he became mayor.
OK - I meant to focus solely on Sarkozy's aesthetic sensibilities: he comes across as bourgeois, in contrast to France's reputation as sophisticated. Regardless of how he was raised, I don't think you'll find him carrying a worn copy of Proust in his jacket pocket.
