Spine?
I wouldn't bet much on spine.
-
Let's not limit ourselves
I think it will be a generous combination of "all of the above."
-
yawn
So.... Mr Tomorrow, do you have anything to say other than "right wing talking heads are irrational and don't listen to reason" anymore? Because I really used to enjoy your comic.
-
It's not really the republicans they will be appeasing ...
It will be the Israel lobby, their corporate donors, and the corporate media. The Democrats are, after all, politicians who exist above all to stay in power. Anyone who expects them to change the rules or the outcome will be disappointed.
-
I don't know why we bother either
The Democrats are about to capitulate and legalize domestic spying and yet they're perceived as the lesser of two evils by liberals and demonized as traiters by right-wingers. When the assumption of government surveilance is rarely, if ever, questioned, let alone fervently attacked, by those in power and the majority of the American public as the blatantly unconstitutional policy that it is you can't help but ask yourself, "Why bother?"
The Bush legacy will continue to reign long after January 20, 2009.
-
Ok, this was a dumb one.
He doesn't screw up ofter, but this was dumb.
The Dems, if THEY don't screw up, will stay in Iraq for as long as their corporate masters can continue their obscene profits. They will continue to do exactly what their corporate masters wish for the domestic policies. And they still won't even be able to SPELL "spine" much less demonstrate one.
Yuck. Bad way to start a Monday...

I'm thinking more of the same - This Perfect Day
With a cheery yet almost insane smile of an Ira Levin inspired micromanaged nanny state. But more of the same, all the same. If you think that after 40 years the Democratic President is going to solve healthcare, the economy and foreign relations, you have been smoking too much weed.

Democratic "Spine" = Wet Noodle
The degree to which the Democrats have enabled the ongoing rush to fascism masterminded by the neocon whores of the corporate globalists apparently HAS caused widespread consternation and revulsion, but also a sense of hopelessness disempowerment. The apathy that results plays into the hands of the authoritarians, rendering our once proud republic the window dressing for a totalitarian state. If the "opposition" takes on the role of enabler for the sick perversions of our heritage perpetrated by Bush & Co., where do we find the antidote for this malady?
While we should be directing our energies at securing a sustainable economy and optimal population size, instead we are forced to do that which should be a given: restore the rule of law, reason, and fairness in the halls of government.
Don't support any of the "front runners", as they are front men (and one woman) for the wealthy corporate elite working to establish an Orwellian totalitarian state. I'm supporting Ron Paul, the only candidate with a reliable record of opposition to the neocon mafia.

Sparky, now THERE'S a penguin!
Admittedly, this is not one of Perkins' best efforts, but still echoes the frustration of anyone who still bothers to try to penetrate the mind of the Kool Aid drinking 20-percenters. (Not long ago, it was the 28-percenters)
Nazi Ann Coulter had titled a book, "How to talk to a Liberal, if you must." That tome went to the recyclers long ago and is now stewing in a vat of pulp ready to make cardboard and paper shop towels.
But there will be no book, "How to talk to a Dittohead, if you must." There is no need to engage them now. So Sparky, I don't know why you even try anymore either. They look so out-of-fashion now -- like polyester disco pants and Afros on white men.
Bebop, they are already playing Christmas carols at Vons out here in SoCal. Plastic fireproof trees made in China are promised and on the trucks from the Port of Los Angeles. But unlike the colorful dots that made the tots wobbly last month, these trees weren't dipped in GHB date rape drug. They spray'd 'em with THC for us old fucks. Just suck the boughs of holly, you'll be stoned until January. Gotta love those Chinese Commies!

Not Just a New President will be Elected in 2008
The 2008 fall election will include a lot more offices than just the Presidency. Every seat in the House will be on the ballot, about 1/3 of the Senate seats, and need I mention state and local elections? (I guess I must.)
The deal is, you have the opportunity to elect BETTER DEMOCRATS. Ones with a so-called "spine." Ones who run on a position of leaving Iraq, by any means necessary, within hours of when the Congress reconvenes, or whatever it is that's at the top of your wish list.
The only catch is, you have to work for it. Get involved in the state Democratic party, push for particular candidates who look like they could deliver. Support their campaigns.
Oh - sorry. It's more satisfying to just complain about the Dems we have now. And cynicism is always so fashionable, so sophisticated, so worldly. Right?
-
My money's on them hiring Bush and Cheney as consultants
They'll be lost without someone telling them what to do.
-
Bravo Zandru
You hit this one right on the head.
If ANY Democrat (even Kucinich) is elected President, and the make-up of Congress remains roughly the same, then we will wind up with a somewhat happier and more comfortable version of exactly what we have now: all the Bush/Cheney/Scalia damage will remain intact; the will be no chance actually to affect the makeup of the Supreme Court; the Senate and House will continue to be dominated by movement Republican hardball; our Constitution (much damaged over many decades of Senatorial abdication) will at last go down the tubes....
Electing a progressive Congress with strong majorities in both Houses is mandatory. And to do that, people everywhere who care about this have to break out of their cynicism and work hard to get the proper people elected in their own state and in their own district.
I'm lucky. I live in Seattle. McDermott is my Congressman; Murray and Cantwell are my Senators. I'll do what I can here in Washington to get fewer Republicans elected in this state, but I can't do much more than that.
The Democrats cannot develop a spine if ordinary Democratic voters don't have any spine.
I wish all of you good luck.
Sandor Alex
