Opus

Pathetic, edible earthlings, surrender now!

The letters thread is now closed.

Wow!

That was great!

And?

What was the middle part?

Saturday, January 19, 2008 06:12 PM

I was wondering where...

Darth has been. This makes as much sense as any other explanation. I also agree that the aliens can keep him, if they have the stomach for it.

See now...

Opus has still got it!

Mixed reaction

On first read, I thought, "Now that's a good one." Then it occurred to me how odd it is to laugh about (or even in relation to) something as hateful as the Iraq war (treated flippantly here with the "air conditioning" remark). Regardless of Cheney's heinousness in all this, there are people over there trying to make a positive difference, and people suffering and dying, and people over there and over here suffering the fallout. Not sure I like something that got me to laugh without thinking like that.

I do think, however, that it is clearly OK to laugh at the iTranslator with the apple logo. Pretty hilarious to think Jobs would be selling it even to aliens, though Gates might beat him to it!

If only there were aliens

There are times when I wish there were the green men from Mars so we could get rid of those guys who are screwing up our lives. Elections aren't enough to get rid of them. They'll be back in countless forms.

Opus is right.

Re: Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet...

I remember using that "Latin" dummy text for paste-ups back in my graphic artist days. (For those who may not be familiar with it, we used blocks of this fake text to create mock-ups of publications for which the content had not yet been written/finished/finalized.)

But, anonymous person, why are you wasting space in this Salon letter column with it? Is your use of it intended as some sort of "comment" regarding the Opus comic strip? Perhaps you could elaborate further... without using the silly fake text.

good one!

air conditioning, indeed!

it's hard to stop a "train" . . .

If ONLY the space aliens would rid us of the troublesome vice president . . .

but. alas, they haven't, nor has the Lord called Dick to be with him. Satan awaits, but he's known to be patient.

Personally, I plan to defecate upon Mr. Cheney's grave once he is planted therein, and the sooner the better from my point of view.

I plan to defecate upon Mr. Cheney's grave -- Robert Lewis

Get there early, there will be a long line.

This may be another sign of the end times approaching but...

I think Berk is slowly showing signs of coming out of his cute phase and actually daring to deliver some straightforward political satire sans the heavily veiled and oblique approach that wouldn't be offensive to the average American dumbass sitting around in bathrobe on Sunday morning reading the funnies to the kiddies.

"What's this cartoon about, daddy?"

"Well Brittany, you see, we've got this vice president who is a real asshole, honey."

"But, I though you and mommie voted for Bush and Cheney?"

"Yeah, we did muffin. But it was a big mistake and now thousands of our soldiers are dead and the rest of them are pinned down in Iraq and Afghanistan."

"Is Dick Cheney dead yet, daddy?"

"No hon, he's not."

"Damn!"

Trying to make a positive difference

There probably are quite a few soldiers who would like to help the Iraqi people, and maybe even a few non-soldiers too. But they can't do much because they're not in charge.

Fish rot from the head down, and the Iraq invasion is really rotten. Conclusion?

Great one

Nice surprise ending.

Lorem ipsem is used as a place holder for when the actual content is ready.

Just like many of Breathed' comics seem to be waiting for some actual funny to be placed.

It's not clear what was so offensive about the Lorem Ipsem comment that it needed to be erased. It seemed perfectly obvious to me what the point of it was. It didn't seem to use any objectionable words. It didn't seem to attack anyone.

All in all a relatively clear, obvious, elegant statement and apparently tipping the hand of some rather clueless thugs in charge of the delete switch here.

Again , a J. Joyce reference

We are once again caught with our defense forces otherwise detained.

Misdirection, plausible deniablility rerouted by the distraction of our gaze into the sublime.

Radience.

Mr. Mulligan's latin (text proof palimset replacement).

Soon the smirking dark prince shall be gone.

It will not take alien kidnappers to rid us of the burden.

History will do it for us.

Goodbye, Nanny Dick.

I am so glad that the Shrub has survived- can anyone imagine a nominal President Richard Cheney?

The functionary one is bad enough!

So long, Emporer Richard.

Sad to say , but given the chance this nation's electorate would probably give you a third act.

Keep the hostage! Give us back our hard-earned radience!

The defense force is busy ...

... learning how to deal with unruly civilians so that they'll know how to control US when it's time to drop the hammer.
