Letters to the Editor
-
Let's see.....
It's a little after 7am Eastern time, so this week's KOF hasn't been posted that long. We've got several shorter letters saying "It sucks. Replace it," (which it does and Salon should) and then we've got the two typical semi-support letters - one about how the clues are there and it's all Lovecraftian and another posting an interview where someone clearly forgot to take their meds. I wish it were Lovecraft, since that would mean Cthulhu would arrive soon and the story would be over. (For a SUBSTANTIALLY better comic that does actually involve Lovecraft characters, check out userfriendly.org)
I think those who are looking deeply into the pieces of this comic for clues like "Danvers Asylum" are wasting their time. This isn't Lost or Cloverfield (or if it's trying to be then it's failing even more miserably at that than it is as a comic strip).
The couple of letters each week that get posted saying, "Just give it a chance..." or "All will become clear soon..." don't have any support for their positions. So either they are shills for the authors/editors or they have some blind faith that there's more to this.
Personally, I think enough's enough. KOF sucks. It started out bad and it hasn't gotten better. It's incoherent and poorly drawn. There are so many other comics out there that deserve a shot at an audience like Salon's that it seems like an incredible waste of space for Salon to keep publishing KOF in the face of the unrelenting disdain for it that is coming through in the letters.

C'mon Salon...
It's time for this wad of crap to go.
Does anyone else suspect Salon is hanging onto KO'F simply because of the outrage it has generated in the letters column? It's like this comic is a child happy for any attention it can get no matter how negative. I feel like we're damned if we complain and damned if we ignore it.
Urg.

Does this comic suck? Yes, it sucks a lot. So what?
What does Salon care about? Advertising revenue, maybe?
What generates advertising revenue? Page views?
As long as you keep reading this comic, or reading the letters it generates, it will continue to generate revenue for Salon. As long as it generates revenue, why would Salon stop publishing it?
If you want it to go away, stop viewing the page (including the letters about it). If you want to be proactive about making it go away, contact the advertisers.
Continuing to read it, or continuing to post and read letters about it, is only going to guarantee its advertising revenue, thereby assuring its presence every Tuesday.

exactly this...
As long as you keep reading this comic, or reading the letters it generates, it will continue to generate revenue for Salon. As long as it generates revenue, why would Salon stop publishing it?
what more evidence does one need to prove that capitalism is, in fact, the foulest beast on the planet...

Subscribers vs. Non-subscribers
The majority of the people writing letters about this comic are subscribers who don't see the ads that non-subscribers have to sit through. Granted, that means Salon already has their money, but few business models last long ignoring both your subscribers and your other customers.

Dunesen's single post...
had more entertainment value than the full run of this lame "comic".
I get it. However, KOF is inferior to comparable works. The author needs to march down to the local comic shop and ask the clerk to be directed to "the wierd shit".

How many weeks? and still sucking....
The couple of letters each week that get posted saying, "Just give it a chance..." or "All will become clear soon..." don't have any support for their positions. So either they are shills for the authors/editors or they have some blind faith that there's more to this.
You forgot to mention that all such letters will earn an editor's pick star, and that none of the negative ones will.
That first panel is not only dumb, but it's offensive.
Oh, if only Cthulhu would come and smite this lame strip!

Oh, the Suspense!
I just can't wait 'til next Tuesday!
Not!
Pretty clever right? Ironic! Can I have my own strip on Salon too?
-
as long as you're reading it...
...it'll stay. Doesn't matter how many negative letters KOF gets - at least it's getting them. Want it to disappear? Quit giving it hits. Everytime you click on it and/or give it any acknowlegment, it'll stick around. (That having been written, here I go contradicting my own advice. Yes, I'm aware.)
Once again I maintain Toni Schlesinger is an uber-trendoid who should stick to writing about the digs of Manhattan's super-hipster millionaires. She only does this on a lark, and the more negative letters she gets - and I'm fairly certain she pokes her head in now and then - make her throw back her head and laugh while she writes this meta-crapola.
Still curious why Douglas Wolk isn't weighing in on KOF. Professional courtesy to a fellow Salonista?

Wow
Beni is a recurring character? How the heck did anyone remember that? I feel like I need to start from the beginning every time to figure out what's going on, and I CERTAINLY don't want to do that...
And I'm probably wrong, but I have this funny feeling that dunesen is actually one of the writers trying to clue us in to how brilliant the strip is.

I could write and draw a better comic on my lunch hour...
... and still have time to run all my errands and enjoy a three-course meal. So could everyone else reading these words. Who can't write four sentences and scribble a couple of lines inside four panels, especially when they don't have to be good or mean anything?
I think the joke's on Salon at this point. Toni and Tom have completely stopped putting any work whatsoever into this. My guess is they're just riding out their contract or maybe they're depressed because they're misunderstood or whatever, but Salon is paying good money for something that everybody hates and that anybody could do better.
I've been tempted to write a fake supportive letter just to watch the editors red-star it, but why add to their pain?

Deeply Offensive to Pakistanis
Am I the only one who thought the flip reference to Benazir Bhutto's assassination was tasteless and deeply offensive?
If you want to kill this horrible strip, let South Asian and Pakistani anti-defamation organizations know that Salon is mocking the death of Bhutto.
Here's a few places to start:

Have fun!
