Yay!

A new WayLay! I enjoy the old stuff, but I really appreciate the lighter, airier lines of Carol's new style. "Uncertainty" is a winner.

Can a person be happy in the midst of uncertainty?

...I'm not sure.

Thursday, May 28, 2009 06:31 PM

I have something better than inner peace

The death of hope.

I always thought....

that the ability to live happily with life's uncertainties was the best meaning for "Life" that anyone could ever muster. :-)

I disagree

I think this is true for many people - like those who like fundamentalist, black and white religion. But there are many of us who view life as an unending mystery and would feel bored if we felt everything was certain. (Think Unitarians.)

I think the problem for many of us is not knowing how to deal with all the choices modern life has opened up for us. The human mind is not geared to deal with this and is easily overwhelmed by having to make too many decisions.

I believe the trick is to be aware of this fact and learn to structure your life in such a way that you think rationally about your options, prioritize, and then stop obsessing about what else you might be doing.

Also understanding that you are likely to live longer than previous generations helps because you have a lot more time to do the things you want. For example, if you yearn to see the world but have a career, kids, etc. that keep you from travelling, realizing that there is plenty of time to accomplish this when you have more freedom not only reduces the self-pity but also gives you something to look forward to. To every thing there is a season....

Whoa!

Funny. Insightful. Logical. Neat ending.

...Who are you and what have you done with Carol Lay?

Guy Clark...

...has a really cool song called "Uncertain Texas" which I didn't realize until today is named after a real town.

Friday, May 29, 2009 08:39 AM

Cool

This is one of those wordplay/metaphysical things I enjoy. You have to wonder whether the town got its name because someone filled out a legal form before having all the answers.

After reading this, I had to check out Uncertain on Google Maps. The street view captures what Carol Lay must have experienced.

I think that embracing uncertainty is essential to being happy in these troubled times. And take some time to watch the Frank Capra's film You Can't Take It with You. Be a Lily!

Carol moved out of L.A. for LA?

Does this mean the house in Silverlake is available?

Just thought I'd take a moment...

...to say that WayLay is one of the best comics ever. I'd take her timeless yet unpretentious wisdom over any topical any day.

this cracked me up

a truly LOL moment - thanks Carol!
