Ha ha!

Get it?

There's no such thing as poor people.

What are the odds?!

Ha!

This would have made

a nice Twilight Zone story.

Why is it that for every single comic on Salon

there's at least one dot-eyed reactionary straining to read some kind of fascistic or immoral message into it?

is the only real poverty absolute?

Only in America, where the Dream its to become just like Rockefeller, would it be funny to give away dimes.

With Hoovervilles returning in a way unheard of for many generations, with even contraceptive assistance to indigent women--wait, they must really not be indigent if they have something--eliminated from the budget because it goes against American morals, I suppose this "sendup" of reality is funny.

I really don't find these views all that amusing.

I believe to be deserving you don't have to have nothing.

A truly unAmerican belief.

not-knowingness

A nice summary of the true not-knowingness of our culture. There are so many things we think it essential to know that we, in fact, can't ever know for sure.

On the other side, I heard two guys yesterday gleefully celebrating the success of a mutual friend who'd created a niche selling people something they didn't need.

Oh, Carol...

Don't let him steal your heart away

Well, I gotta learn to dance

If it takes me all night and day

--Chuck Berry, sung by John Lennon

Got a wee bit of a problem with this 'toon. I guess the 'moral of the story' goes something like this; correct me if I'm wrong?

There are plenty of poor people out there, but none of them needs a million dollars. But before I concluded that, I got the distinct message that there are NO poor people out there.

And that's a message I'd have to disagree with emphatically.

Nice work, Ms. Lay. Read you every Friday!

remember, though.........

Carol Lay was once a cartoonist for Mad magazine: this may be at the heart of some of her skewed screwball humor

c 1994? (see first panel)

The more things change...?

If you want a moral go read Moby Dick

This comic has great structure - a slow clear setup, several devices that elicit strong recognition (lotto winner, crooked private eye, a prince-and-pauper switch) and a well-executed twist ending. All this in 12 panels on one page and for free. You can't beat it.

Another thought...

...is that the only people not scamming for dollars are beyond the need to do so.
