Is this supposed to be funny? Carol aren't you a little young to be such a

misanthrope?

I fail to see any humor in this post. But it makes me seriously wonder what's up with Carol Lay.

It's not so different from the older stuff...

It's just lacking in the old subtlety.

It's not Miss Taken or DoubleDee and DoubleDum. That's got to count for something, right?

Breaking the Fourth Wall in this strip? What a shame.

I guess it must've been a bad week for Ms. Lay. She broke the fourth wall, but only partially. The only real "breaking" was where the lady asked "What's the gag?" It would have been more effective, and clearer breaking, if she looked towards the "camera" and asked, "What's the gag, Carol?"

Well, we all have our off weeks.

Afraid I miss the deeper meaning

I thoroughly enjoy most of Ms. Lay's work, particularly the whole "metaphor world" series that ran a while back with the ID Lid and all that. But I have to say I'm missing the context of the last panel here. Is it a message addressed to people like some of the previous posters, who just don't seem to get the layers of her work, or is a retirement announcement? Or something else that I've haven't accounted for?

Whatever the answer, I hope it's not the leaving-the-business one, as I would really miss her work if so.

Gender blender

"The only real 'breaking' was where the lady asked 'What's the gag?'"

ummmm "lady"?

There's a sucker born every minute.

A sucker, and a misanthrope. In this strip, one of each comes together, with deadly consequences.

Maybe the lesson here is to read the fine print before you jump in and dig--say, on things like interest-only mortgages . . .
