hiding the comics?

I had to do a page search for the word "comics" in order to locate today's Keith Knight cartoon. Salon is the only place online for regularly access to your strips, and I'm sure it brings a lot of readers. Are you trying to stop that?

Don't shrink the image, it looks crappy.

Don't present Knight's artwork shrunken; it ruins the image and probably violates your contract with him. At the least, shrinking the cartoon is a sign of disrespect.

solution to the new format

If you want to see (as opposed to squint at) the comix, use Salon Mobile: http://mobile.salon.com/

(link at sig).

This new format sucks

I also had to do a word search on the main page to find the comics link, and I'm sick of this new format also. They seem to have fixed the "click to enlarge" button today, but I shouldn't HAVE to click to enlarge...I've already clicked once to see the comic! I feel the same way when clicking on an article link, which gives you two paragraphs and a "click here to continue reading" button at the bottom of them. I wanted to read the whole article, which is why I clicked on it in the first place..why should I have to click twice? Also, the front page still has "Beta" in small letters under the Salon logo...if this is the only version of Salon we can use, shouldn't it be out of Beta bye now? Oh well.

Very amusing comic today, Mr. Knight...sorry for all the ranting about the new format.

When somebody intentionally accesses the comics page, and then clicks on their desired comic, and is presented with a thumbnail with a "click to enlarge button", I think it is bit presumptuous at that point to think they are actually interested in READING THE COMIC. I mean they have only clicked through about 5 or 6 times to get here so far, perhaps after clicking "click to enlarge" you could prompt us with a brief advertisement, followed by an "are you sure you'd like to view this comic? (yes / no)" and then another advertisement, before actually allowing us to read this comic.

Says a lot

It says a lot about your web design when people are saying it's better to use the mobile version. Serously? I have to come to your site, then switch to the mobile version to read a freaking comic?

And yes, asking people to click to enlarge when they've already clicked TO GO TO THE PAGE THE COMIC IS ON is beyond stupid. Come on Salon, you can do better than this.

Great comic, horrible web design.

New format

FYI people, there's a Comics link at the bottom of the main page. It's a dumb place for the category links but that's where they put them. If the tabs at the top of the main page had drop-down menus they could list all the categories there, too but they don't so you're stuck scrolling to the bottom.

Salon, this new format for comics is crap. The comic is the star of the page so it should be bigger than it is and usable without having to click to enlarge. Change the text to say "click here on on the comic to enlarge" and make the cursor change to the hand while over the comic, I bet a bunch of people think they have to click on that little red text. The other page content is fine but the comic itself should dominate. Also, clicking OUTSIDE the enlarged comic should shrink it - don't make me hunt for the button in the corner of the image.

Lastly, given that 99% of all the comic comments are about the FORMAT, not the COMICS, that should tell you that you've made a mistake. Even if you're not going to change it (or other things in the new design that people don't like) you should post something visible explaining your reasons and/or saying what you WILL change and when.

I wonder...

If the new format showed the comix at full size and had a button that said "click here to shrink," how many readers would click?

I wish someone at New Salon would just come out and say that this whole redesign is just a way to increase mouse-clicks on the Salon site. Then it would at least make some sense.

Oh, and btw... thanks, Keith, for another great cartoon! We live for your lines...

Here's an idea

The New Salon format has 6 columns. On the comix page, you're using 3 for the comic, 2 for "In the News," and 1 for "Currently in Salon." Nobody seems happy. The comic is WAY too small; on a small screen, hardly more than a thumbnail. How about, instead: the full comic in fulll 6-column banner across the top of the page, and put "In the News" and "Currently in Salon" -- AND links to other recent comix (where'd they go?) -- UNDER the comic. Is that too hard to engineer?

I'm thinking of changing my signature name to "The Customer Is Always Right," just to remind y'all! Thanks for listening... I hope...
