...is priceless.
Naturally, black people are happy about this, however Mr Obama is of mixed race. Seen in pictures with his father, who is black, the difference is obvious.
I think that we should forget about race but I suspect that it will go on forever.
In this country, we have a fascination with unimportant things.
Rock on Keef!
...who immediately thought, man, that robot is going to be dope. Keef, we are for sure meant to be friends.
I always enjoy the K Chronicles and I agree – the Jefferson line's a killer!
But I'm South African, so I'm not that familiar with US presidents – who's the bewigged gent on the far right doing "Been there, done that"? Has the US in fact already had a president classed "white" who was actually of mixed race? As a compulsive history browser, I'd love to know.
And regarding the "biracial" debate which is no doubt going to go on forever, I also noticed this, early in the campaign. But my take on that (living in a country where some people can really obsess about this stuff) has always been that Pres-elect Obama was "black" in the (offensive, I know) sense of "non-white" – ie, we could be persnickety and insist on "biracial", but to people who have Certain Views, "one drop" would have been enough.
And from another perspective, would Americans of colour – many of whom are a mixture of races that would befuddle an Apartheid categorizer, but who nevertheless are all treated as "black" by The Man – also not prefer to claim the Prez as simply "black" rather than going for pedantic accuracy?
I think Garry Trudeau's Doonesbury cartoon (click signature for link) said it best, with the GIs watching the victory on TV and a white soldier saying, "He's half-white, you know." To which his black sergeant laconically replies, "You must be so proud". I think that's the whole black/white/biracial argument right there, summed up in one panel.
But all debate aside, congratulations to all of you in the US; the excitement and hope of this election really is echoing around the world.
The bewigged gentleman is Bill Clinton, who got a rep. for being "America's First Black President" because of his style--he played his saxophone on Arsenio Hall's show, for example. As well, the GOP put him through the kind of hell one figured they'd greet a black president with. :)
You got a bona fide LOL outta me with this one, Keith. Specifically, Jefferson indulging his centuries-old case of jungle fever! All the best to die frau und Little Gravy! Aloha!
