The Long Silence

In Nicolas Freeling's "The Long Silence" the detective, Piet Van der Valk, actually does get killed halfway through the book. Talk about a shocker! Talk about a page you had to read two, three times, asking yourself "did that really happen?"

(Of course, Freeling's no fool. He already had a new detective character up and running in a completely different series. But still...)
