  • Democrats Selling Out?

[Read the article: Make your own candidate]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Did I read you say that you were still bothered by Democrats that sold out the fringe? What the hell you talking about? You, who cannot even figure out which Democrat you prefer without taking some idiotic internet quiz that just wanted your email address anyway to sell to someone else out there?

The lunatic left fringe has cost us enough elections, just as the lunatic right fringe is now undoing the Republican party. Face it, the majority of Americans might be in the center when it comes to values-oriented issues. They are open to a point. Come around slowly, but often come around when they see an unjust society at work around them. And yes, even some Democrats are not as far left as some in the party.

But to say someone "sold out" while you bitch that you can't find an ideal candidate, and hey, there's always November to cast a ballot...yadda, yadda...well, let's just say that you sound lazy to me. Too lazy to do the homework, watch the debates, read the many sources of information out there on the candidates, and put in the work of determining which person would do the best job given the complex problems our country faces today.

But, hey, we'll wake you up come November in case you sleep through your alarm clock.

  • FACE IT...

The U.S.A. is no country for this old man either! And McCain is just too old. Not his age, mind you - his ideology. That, coupled with his trying so damn hard to please the minority right-wing fringe, makes him obsolete before he gets even gets started. We need an immediate change of direction in our country - not a detour on the scenic route.

Factor in McCain's "stay in Iraq for a hundred years" and throw more federal dollars in that black hole, and you have a another disaster-in-the-making.

No, we need McCain and the rest of the right-wingers in perpetual retirement.

  • THE TRIP TO THE VET IS A RACKET

[Read the article: What I wouldn't do for my cat]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

The cost of pet care has sky-rocketed right along with the cost of human care. Unlike your passive husband, I have learned to ask "what do you want to do, what's it for, what are the alternates or consequences, and what is the cost - in writing, please." I do the same to have the transmission rebuilt in my car.

I think they take advantage of the emotional element, and we need to keep our hearts in check and ask the tough questions. After all, do we want to put our pets into treatments that are not necessary, won't improve their health, prolong their suffering, and tap our savings accounts? I don't.

I had a vet take advantage once. I found out by accident. I moved from one city to another 2 hours drive away. My dog was diagnosed with diabetes right in the middle of the move. The vet in our old city wanted to keep him and "stabilize" him for 3 or more days to start insulin treatment and adjust it accordingly at a cost of probably thousand-plus dollars. The new vet showed me how to inject his insulin and sent him home with me. She said he did not need to be hospitalized, we could set up his glucose tracking to adjust his dose when he was feeling better in another week. It would be one day at the vet drawing blood every two hours to measure his blood sugar - alot less expensive than hospitalization and far less traumatic to the dog too.

Vets are ripping people off. Pet prescriptions are costly. Medical advances mean more treatment options and prolonged lives for our pets. As their caretakers, sometimes with limited resources, we have to make sure they stay healthy. And when that's not enough, we have to ask the tough questions and maybe find new vets sometimes too.

Maybe the reason so many dogs and cats are homeless is because of the high cost of taking care of them (mandatory shots, monthly heartworm pills, Frontline flea and tick applications to name a few)is taking its toll on the purses and wallets of families and single persons. It's worth looking into, don't ya think?
