NEW POLITICS? HARDLY.
[Read the article: Barack Obama's nouvelle vague]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]That as a political reporter you cannot figure out by now exactly what Obama's message is represents the dilemma that Obama-makers would love us to have: Choose either, or... Choose what Obama-makers refer to as "old-style politics" or the "politics of hope." How interesting it is when veteran Democratic consultants get ahold of new blood! They would have you believing the moon rises and the sun sets on Obama's bland prescription for "hope" for us all.
By the way, isn't the "one America" line already being used? Hmmm. Guess stealing lines is new politics of hope too. "I HOPE John Edwards doesn't comment on the fact we're using his lines out here." That crap is older than dirt. Obama may think he's coming up with something new, but his consultants certainly are not. Kerry started using Edwards' stuff in 2004 just before primary elections too.
Obama doesn't have policy answers - he has platitudes. Guess that's what comes from "being normal." Or so Obama and the Obama-makers would have us believe. Ufortunately for Obama, he and his wife are not normal. Few of us are dual Harvard Law couples simply trying to make our way in America. Nope. He and his wife are the same elite liberals as the Kerry and the rest of them. Give them a few more years and they'll resemble Bill and Hillary more than John and Elizabeth.
The guy doesn't have a clue and it's time that the media started taking our democratic process seriously and stop all this nonsense of creating personalities in order to have a horserace. Do your homework and you won't have to be standing around dropping the names of high-priced spread consultants, and whispering in their ears, "What exactly is it that he is saying here?"
He's not saying anything. Report it and move on.

WHY ARE WE HAVING THIS CONVERSATION?
[Read the article: Who would Antonin Scalia torture?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Everyone knows that capital punishment does nothing to deter criminals from committing criminal acts. And that capital punishment is more about revenge for the victim's family and society-at-large than anything else ('There, he's dead now too. Serves him right.").
But what we do not ever acknowledge is how depressing it is that society kills people legally in order to exact that revenge and will not own up to it.
Why are we discussing how to kill people instead of why we kill them at all? I'm no bleeding heart for the criminals who kill others, sometimes in brutal and less than humane ways. But I feel no compullsion to get down in that gutter with them.
If we have to kill them, why should it be cleaner, more antispetic, and less messy than whatever crime they've committed? Where is it written that legally authorized murder of another person should be palatable to the observers? Maybe it should not.
Murder is murder. If we are going to do it, then show it for what it is and stop all this nonsense about cleaning it up for the observers or giving them fair warning that it's really torture in disguise. Would the victim's family really care if the murderer was tortured?
I'm sure there is a better way to kill people. We should have asked Saddam what he recommended before we hanged him in some barn-like structure with cell phone photo witnesses.

GET A LIFE
[Read the article: Just follow the map ]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Why would anyone at the age of 50-something bore another person about how banal their life is? I mean, is this about that or hyping some hybrid car that purports to reduce our consumption on oil, but in reality, doesn't do a very good job of it?
Here's what you tell that person: "I've listened to you piss and moan for 30 years now about your life. And quite frankly, I'm tired of it. I mean, we're both at the age now where either of us could have a heart attack and drop dead, and I would hate like hell that the last thing I heard was your whining. And wouldn't you hate it if the last thing you did on the planet was to be sitting here complaining about your life? Please. Find someone else to bore to death."

Walk Now - Not Later
[Read the article: Cops arrested my partner for felony heroin possession]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]You have done all the 'honorable things" that needed to be done; i.e., you got her to treatment, paid for attorneys, and got her started on a road to recovery if she wants it. Now you can walk away with a clear conscience.
Do not worry about what the family and friends will say, think, feel, or talk about behind your back. Tell them straight up that things have not been all that great, that you cannot continue in the relationship, that you are ending it, and hope that she finds her way out of her current situation.
I agree with Tennis: She will either change her circumstances or not and neither will, or should, have anythng to do with you. And maybe, just maybe, this was her way of getting out too.

THE PROBLEM WITH OBAMA....
[Read the article: A Democratic donnybrook]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]is exactly what you just said: no one remembers what he said.
I mean, boyfriend, your lips are moving but you ain't saying nothin'!
It isn't a trick - the guy just isn't saying nothing; no policy ideas, nothing. He isn't saying anything. Let me repeat this just in case the media have not yet heard: Obama isn't saying anything.
How far do we travel with this guy who says nothing - and yet he has somehow managed to fool people into thinking that he is actually saying something.
Obama isn't going to change politics-as-we-know-it in 4 years. Does anyone think the GOP is going to lay down at this guys' feet because he "wants to change politics as we know it?" Are we nominating a "cause freak" or a President?
The United Stateis is in big trouble - the world is totally screwed up and this guy is lecturing us on playing nice with one another? Bitch, please! I am sick of platitudes - I want ACTION not pretty words. Keep voting for Obama, Democrats, and you can kiss another presidential election goodbye.
