[Read the article: "Women are stupid!" The discussion continues]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

You're obviously a woman, because any man knows the rules when it comes to sports stars and crying.

Crying is allowed after winning championships, breaking long-standing records, as well as retirement. See Michael Jordan after he won his first title...

Crying is not allowed after losing... End of discussion... See anything written about Adam Morrison and J.J Redick after Gonzaga and Duke lost in the NCAA basketball tournament two years ago. Both were blasted for crying after losing their games.

You are allowed to cry after winning, because your emotions can no longer get in the way of competing and you can now allow yourself to be overcome with emotion.

You are not allowed to cry after losing because you were obviously not prepared enough, and you should already be thinking about how to be better prepared next time, not wallowing in self pity.

You are allowed to cry after retiring because... well who wouldn't cry after after deciding they could no longer play games for a living for a great salary.

Those are rules on crying and competition. I didn't create them, but there they are.

Yes, this was partially tongue in cheek...

Getting satisfaction online is like the difference between drving to work in a BMW or riding a crowded train/bus with your face in someone's unwashed arm pit. Both get you where you want to go, but one is completely unsatisfying.

Don't fool yourself, masturbation is never a substitue for the real thing, it is most often borne out of boredom.

I realize you meant that article as an opposing viewpoint, but I can't take social trend from Japan too seriously. I mean, japan takes the cake when it comes to fads.

  • @Hester/Eggs

[Read the article: Wait a minute: Iron whose shirt?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Hold on Hester, did you just say that you have basically talked yourself into voting for Clinton because she's been discriminated against? Would you vote for Al Sharpton just because you felt he'd been discriminated against??? Come on! I won't be voting for Hillary for reasons that are well documented in my postings. She's a liar... She lies about her public life, she lies about her private life, she won't let us see her tax returns... Everything about her is shrouded in an air of mystery.

EggsBenedict... That's nice you believe that Hillary would have been a somebody if she hadn't married Bill, but that kind of useless conjecture does no one any good. All it does is create false illusions in the uninformed reader. Obviously we have no idea what would have happened if Hillary didn't marry Bill. Perhaps she already would be President. Perhaps she'd be in jail for defrauding clients. (What did happen to those billing records?)

  • Not a sport

[Read the article: Sexism in the pool]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Calling it a sport does an injustice to real sports. It's an athletic competition with grades also given for presentation. When they dock a a grand slam a run because the hitter took too long around the bases, or make a touchdown only worth 5 points because his socks were in clear violation of the uniform code, then synchronized swimming can be called a sport... For now it's an athletic competition with subjective grading.

This post was not meant to degrade the athletes, and their fitness. I am quite aware of the physical prowess needed to compete at their level, it's just not a sport...

  • If you're going to call me a troll...

[Read the article: Sexism in the pool]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Then at least read what I wrote before you dismiss it. Yes there are subjective aspects to almost every sport. The difference is that they don't usually DIRECTLY affect the score. In baskeball, did the ball go in hoop or not is a very black and white thing. In track and field either you ran faster than you competitor or you did not, either you threw the javelin farther than your opponent or you did not, and so on...

What you do not have, is point deductions for things like artistic expression. Did you miss the line about having to maintain a smile while performing these water acrobatics? Who made that rule up? Seriously!!?? You lose points for not smiling!!?? Same thing in gymnastics and figure skating... If I perform all the technical aspects well, but don't smile I might lose because of that!!?? Can you imagine if we had to use this kind of stupid approach in baseball, football and the like? We'd never have the pictures of Bob Gibson's glower, or Jordan's intensity in mid-competition because they'd have to have those fake plastic smiles plastered to their mugs.

Having a referee call fouls and ensure fair play is not the same as having a judge to determine the winner. As the names suggest, referees are there to make sure the players determine the outcome as fairly as possible. Judges determine the winner... you do the math...

  • Vince Foster

[Read the article: Happy stained blue dress day, everyone!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I know this may be hard to believe, but I don't believe the media or anyone in particular ever claimed Hillary was the actual perp who killed Vince Foster. Poliicians tend to have other to do their "wetwork" for them.

So, no... she's not off the hook for Vince Foster...

"Wow. That's pretty much the opposite of the conclusion I came to, but okay."

Actually Kate, there are some pretty well documented reasons that have nothing to do with her gender... They just get ignored by everyone... Check my previous posts. For the occasional name call, no one has ever challenged the veracity of my reasons.

  • Dimmers

[Read the article: The light-bulb wars switch on again]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

There are much safer ways to make your incandescent bulbs last longer and increase your savings while decreasing your waste. Get rid of your lightswitches and replace them with dimmers...

It's that simple. Running your lights at 90% will double the life of the bulb and the difference is nearly imperceptible to the naked eye. Run your lights lower and the savings continue to increase almost exponentially. The dimmers will generally pay for themselves within the year. Plus you don't have to worry about the toxins from the bulbs if you happen to drop them.
