  • Is this a trend?

[Read the article: "I didn't like sex at all"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Alice Sheldon, a beautiful woman who (etc.)

Martha Gellhorn was a gorgeous, (etc.)

I can't wait to hear about the next bio of a hot babe author! Maybe you can find one who actually liked doin' it, huh, Salon?

Seriously, now, who do you have writing these teasers? They're both dead authors. Is their relative attractiveness the first thing you need to tell us? What if they'd been ugly? Would you try to pull people in with that?

By contrast, a review of the Harper Lee doesn't mention her looks until the fourth paragraph - "(He also called her a "good looker," though she was known for being frumpy.)"

Mockingbird sings: The first biography of the reclusive Harper Lee shows that she contributed much more to "In Cold Blood" than we thought.

At least you seem to be done with the Ann Lamott / Ayelet Waldman trend for now.

  • Bad Ideas

[Read the article: Overlooking New Orleans' women]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

New Orleans is a bad idea.

Moving back to New Orleans is a bad idea.

The way the city is run, and how it's being rebuilt: more bad ideas.

Folks who are dumb enough to want to move back are lucky that circumstances are preventing it.

  • Crushing?

[Read the article: This week in antiabortion activism]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"Regardless, our crush on Catholics for a Free Choice continues -- it's keeping an eye on other antichoice groups going into this fall's election season, particularly Priests for Life and Catholic Answers -- and if Everson keeps making good on his promise to crack down on campaigning violations, we may even start crushing on the IRS"

CRUSHING? Can you please PRETEND to be a serious journalist, at least?

If you use language that is hard to take seriously, it makes it harder to take your message seriously. Maybe Broadsheet is "just" a blog, but can you raise the bar some?

  • Only a Dollar....

[Read the article: Arugula for everyone]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"Organic milk will "only" cost "about a dollar more" than industrial milk, per half gallon? Talk about elitist! There are still Americans for whom that breezy "about a dollar more" will be an obstacle.

    Hmmmmmmmmmm......."

That's right bucko, only a dollar more. How's that elitist? That's the sort of argument that Republicans love to make on behalf of their 'poor but proud' constituents .... as they enact one policy after another that guarantees this sort of martyrdom of poverty will continue.

Arguing for cheap, dirty, anti-elitist milk is not a good thing, in my book.

Arguing for a decent standard of living so that everyone can afford the good stuff IS.

  • Bananas...

[Read the article: Arugula for everyone]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

... grown in a typical plantation are heavily treated with a variety of pesticides.

Herbicides are also used, and as often as not all of this is stuff that's banned here because even our wonderful government couldn't ignore how toxic it is!

Just google 'banana' and 'pesticide', there's no shortage of info.

Here's an article attributed to the Cincinatti Enquirer:

  • The Divorce...

[Read the article: Two weddings, one day, miles apart: What to do?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Let that decide it. Skip the wedding of the couple that will end up getting divorced first.

  • I smell a Narcissist...

[Read the article: How can great love just stop, just like that?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

That sickly sweet aroma of "too good to be true"? That's what they smell like, at first anyway. Hope he doesn't come back to string you along some more, and savor the memory of that great illusion. Don't let him in if you find him on your doorstep! Do a little research on what it's like to be romanced by a Narcissist so you'll see the next one coming, and eventually you'll find someone real.

  • What is it with people?

[Read the article: Get out the single-woman vote]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

In 25 years of voting, I've missed TWO elections - in one instance I was a minute late, in another I had a horrible flu.

NO politician has ever pandered to me in any way, I don't feel like I fit into any of their favorite demographics, sometimes I think most voters are just plain stupid.

So I'm torn. Shouldn't EVERYONE vote? Or is it a really a good idea to have even more, even stupider voters participating; people who practically need to be lead to the polls with candy, for fuck's sake?

    Get out the vote??

People who can't be bothered should just GET OUT, period.

  • Critics...

    [Read the article: Kirkus shrugged]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Two Critics are in a boat on the sea of Galilee, and the boat is leaking badly.

Jesus sees the sinking boat from shore, and walks across the water to save the two critics. As the Lord approaches, one critic turns to the other and says: "Would you look at that, he can't even swim!"

  • Be Brave...

[Read the article: Will I lose my one great love because I acted on principle?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

... a wise friend once told me, regarding matters of the heart. Go to her, lay it on the line, do your best to win her back; accept the outcome either way. (listen to Juan!!)

Aren't you a little young for grad school anyway? I just finished, at 42, and I always felt that my colleagues in their 20's (and even early 30's) just hadn't been around the block enough times to really absorb what school had to offer. I suspect that you, getting your phd at what, 25? might end up being yet another graduate with far more knowledge than wisdom.

I would guess that this experience, however it works out, will be more important to you than what you may or may not learn in grad school. Go for it. You may end up suffering; when you learn to deal with that you'll deserve a phd.

~ it's better to regret something you have done than to regret something you haven't done.~

  • Wow

[Read the article: A tree grows in the Sahel]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

This guy should be up for a Nobel Prize.

  • Outing

[Read the article: From Foleygate, signs of things to come?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

    What ever happened to it?

Where's ACT UP when you need them?

    Queer Nation, you there?

  • The Price is Right

[Read the article: If a woman is a man, can she still marry a dude?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"I hope they fire the rest of Broadsheet and just let Ms. Price write"

I wouldn't go quite so far, but the point is well taken...
