  • How much?

[Read the article: EPA to Americans: Drink rocket fuel! ]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Look, this is just a blurb about the EPA's decision to not regulate something that really ought to be regulated; it isn't a real article. Dig a little yourselves if Salon didn't do enough digging for your satisfaction. Which they should, but that's another matter. A simple google search finds plenty of information.

For example: "Application of a sensitive new detection method has revealed widespread perchlorate contamination of groundwater in the southwestern United States, typically at 0.005-0.020 mg/L (5-20 ppb). Perchlorate is a competitive inhibitor of the process by which iodide is actively transported from the bloodstream into the thyroid. This inhibitory action of perchlorate is the basis of its pharmaceutical use (in the treatment of hyperthyroidism) as well as its potential toxicity." The full article can be found at: http://www.ehponline.org/members/2002/110p927-937greer/greer-full.html

The EPA release says: "(Washington, D.C. – Oct. 3, 2008) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency conducted extensive review of scientific data related to the health effects of exposure to perchlorate from drinking water and other sources and found that in more than 99 percent of public drinking water systems, perchlorate was not at levels of public health concern. Therefore, based on the Safe Water Drinking Act criteria, the agency determined there is not a "meaningful opportunity for health risk reduction" through a national drinking water regulation."

The problem is that they've been so politicized and anti-regulation, a lot of people (me, for example) don't believe it when they say things like "perchlorate was not at levels of public health concern", especially when available studies seem to indicate that the opposite may well be true. There's no good reason why they can't adopt a regulation instead of letting the various states come up with a patchwork of standards. There's a bad reason, not having an overall standard allows their friends in the 'defense' business to keep polluting while they lobby to quash any effective regulations.

Apparently the anti-regulation trolls don't have much to do today.

  • Licking Valley indeed!

You'd think they'd name it George Washington High or something.

I wonder if their chief rival HS is Pole Mountain....

    October Surprise?

    FLORIDA???

    WMD?

Come on, folks, do you really think they're going to go down so easily?

I just hope Obama's security detail is really, really on the ball.

    Cary, that was awesome!

If you wrote a book about this mess, that would be a great title!

  • "all environmental choices must be made with the human cost in mind" - ???

[Read the article: Is my relationship killing the planet?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

You mean all human choices must be made with the environmental cost in mind, of course. Because otherwise we're all completely screwed, don'tcha know.

And TCF - you see your boyfriend only every six weeks?? and you have to fly over a thousand miles to do it??? That's very weird, and dysfunctional. Humans are (supposed to be) very social, community oriented animals. After reading this and your defense of casual sex a while back I would say that you have some problem with intimacy. You might want to work on that, it warps your perspective.

    Just like Dubya!

It'll be nice to (hopefully) get someone in the oval office who doesn't need to prove he's a real man at our expense and is instead interested in being an effective chief executive.

  • BPD

[Read the article: Murder suspect or sex symbol?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I've followed the case since it happened, and Ms. Knox clearly seems to have it. The media may well deserve contempt, but murder suspect/sex symbol actually happens to be a fairly descriptive dichotomy for someone with a serious BPD. (funny, my typing just got interrupted by an ad for Angelina Jolie's latest film.....)

  • Umm...

What with the video camera and all, did you get the license plate of the car that hit you and call the cops about a hit-and-run???

Or are you just another wuss Democrat who'll let the repuglicans get away with whatever dirty tricks they can? Or were they just aiming for the 'kick me' sign on your back?

  • Pennsyltucky

[Read the article: Sarah Palin: "The time for choosin's comin' real soon"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

is a term that's been around for quite a while.

    The Wikipedia entry says:

Pennsyltucky is a slang word to refer to the rural part of the state of Pennsylvania outside the Pittsburgh and Philadelphia metropolitan areas, more specifically applied to the mountainous central region. Less common is the term "Pennsylbama."

I'd guess it's a Philadelphia expression, it certainly isn't a San Francisco one.

  • Ad?

[Read the article: Palin: Last of a breed]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Hey, what's up with this ad I've gotten twice on Salon in the last few minutes?

It's Sarah Palin and Joe Biden saying 'Marriage is between a man and a woman' - are the anti gay marriage zealots really running this ad? Really? It seems like a fake to me. Hey, now there's one with John and Barack! Well, that certainly changed MY mind!

I can't wait to see how prop. 8 here in CA and the 'every sperm is sacred' amendment in CO do tomorrow.

Maybe the nutjobs will get raptured as soon as Obama wins and the culture wars will finally end.

  • Stop Signs

[Read the article: Voting: The rational choice]

Much like people stopping at stop signs, voting works better when when everyone who's qualified to vote votes.

  • $$$

[Read the article: "My Lord, I feel something is happening"]

That's why. Salon got their money, do you think it will net any votes for prop 8?

I do not. I did get a good laugh, though.

  • the Black Vote in CA

[Read the article: Congressional Dems' debt to black voters]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Apparently, SEVENTY PERCENT of black voters in California are homophobic bigots. Or at least they vote that way.

I'm still trying to figure out how that's a good thing...
