Dear Salon...

I accidentally looked at that horrible comic strip you have. I swear it was an accident; so in fairness I think you should remove my click from your stats and refund any payment you may have received from any advertiser(s) who may be misled into thinking I might have paid attention to the ads next to that steaming pile of shit.

Thanks.

Your relationship:

Stick a fork in it, it's done. Your feelings are clear, your obligations are clear; there's no there there anymore.

You might be friends with her, and she with your family; you may even be able to co-parent with her. But it's done. Time to move on.

You're speaking from the heart, and most everyone else is reading from a script. Go with your true feelings. Either she's hit bottom or she hasn't, either she's ready to get better or she isn't; whatever the case a clean break now is probably the only favor you can do her.

It's sad, but hopefully things will get better from here on out.

I wish I had a subscription to cancel!

But I think I let it go when they got that blowhard Paglia back. And I would have again just because of Kansas Flatulence or whatever the F it's called. But this time, it's something more significant: Salon doesn't seem to know there's a nother Democrat in the running. His name is John Edwards, and he finished SECOND in Iowa. Ahead of Hillabeans. Second place, without throwing around nearly as much money as Obama and whatsername. Go ahead Salon, say it: John Edwards finished SECOND!

John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards John Edwards

John Edwards! Got Dammit!

I'm surprised you mentioned Obama at all, why didn't you just keep up the all Hillary, all the time bit? Sheesh.

BTW

I did notice that this was essentially an article about Hillabeans. That's not hard to figure out; by default, any political article in Salon is about her.

Original article: Tigers don't belong in zoos

Trainman...

I'll second that. Kiss it all goodbye, folks. Like Oscar Wilde said, "Either that wallpaper goes, or I do." Either we go, or everything else does. Too bad, huh? In the end, the wallpaper stayed.

And like Mark Twain said, "Man is the only animal that can blush. Or needs to." Sorry, Silenced, humans aren't that wonderful. You're just high.

Yojimbo 7 - your analogy is kind of offensive to rape victims, I think. The tiger and the kid who died are the victims; the two punks who pretty clearly instigated the trouble are the ones to blame. In any case, provoking a man-eating tiger into rage and then getting attacked by it (and make no mistake, that's what this is about) is NOT the same, not at all, as a woman getting raped 'because she was asking for it'.

Deserved??

"But nothing compares to my revulsion to the idea that a young man deserved to lose his life for allegedly taunting a tiger."

"Allegedly"? The fact that the tiger attacked is pretty much de facto proof that the taunting actually occurred. If no attack had occurred, then it could be alleged that the tiger had been taunted. That's just my non-defense-lawyer opinion.

Whether or not they "deserved" it doesn't enter into it. Does someone "deserve" to be hit by a train for walking on the tracks? Does someone "deserve" to be eaten by Piranhas if they swim in their waters? Does someone "deserve" to be hit by a bus for crossing the street against the light? Since such things are predictable, even inevitable, it doesn't really matter what else you call it. I happen to think that "deserve" is a fair word for it.

"God exacteth of thee less than thine iniquity deserveth. --Job xi. 6." Did Job deserve what he got? Does anyone deserve their fate?

"Zoos attacks should never be predictable or inevitable"

Look, the world just isn't safe. Reassuring crap like that that society wants you to believe isn't really true.

I don't think humans can safely contain wild animals any more than we can safely contain splitting atoms or earthquakes. Of course, you may be more comfortable living near a nuclear power plant than I am. The tiger probably won't get out, it almost certainly won't, it hasn't happened yet, but it might! That's the nature of the world. You should try to learn that now, because you'll be in for one hell of a surprise later if you don't. MAYBE you'll live the modern life of (seemingly) perfectly managed risk, but maybe you won't! And even if you do (seemingly), it's probably just good luck.

Granted the SF Zoo is run by incompetents, but what isn't? Can you name a single institution that needs to manage risk perfectly that actually does? The Nuclear biz? The military? The medical-industrial complex? Nope. Surprise - the local menagerie, notoriously badly managed for years, is also prone to failure.

What if the tiger had gotten out because of an earthquake? Well, who could have predicted an earthquake in San Francisco? More to the point, of course, is to ask who could have predicted exactly what would happen in an earthquake in San Francisco? We're due for a huge one in SF any year now, it'll be interesting to see what happens.

Any Democrat

is better than any Republican, in this race. That's who I'll vote for. But I can't help but wonder, unfortunately, can the Democrats win without a white male somewhere on the ticket?
