forget the fried fish
[Read the article: Bowling for votes in Wisconsin]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]when in Milwaukee, the word is Usinger;
remember "U S I N G E R", the best old-style German sausage anywhere
when in Racine (next door to Milwaukee), the word is
"Kringle"
"K R I N G L E"
if you do not know what "kringle" is, then I feel sorry for you and your utterly deprived taste buds
if you have never had Usinger sausage, then I feel sorry for you and your defunct sensory organs
if you want cheese put to the best use possible, then travel from Milwaukee south to Springfield Illinois and say,
"I want a horseshoe!"

Watch IT!
[Read the article: The dude vote]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]In the Illinois primary, I voted for Obama just to give him the so-called 'native son' vote as well as because Hillary Clinton is such a crazy unifying force for the country bumpkins in the Republican Party.
The November elections are still several months away and I am
adopting a 'wait-and-see' attitude until then. I would to see a Clinton and Obama ticket, with McCain tagged as a possible Secretary of Defense or Secretary of State, with The Other Clinton (you know which one I mean) given an ambassador-at-large position in the State department, just to keep him out of everyone's hair.

about U.S. Senator Obama
[Read the article: This Modern World]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]he is a protege of the late, great U.S. Senator Paul Simon: it is for the reason that I decided to vote for Obama
I welcome the 2008 version of the Swift Boat Veterans to surface again, so that I can play 'Whack-An-Asshole' with them
if the conservatives want to play rough, then I am ready and waiting for the knuckle-dragging idiots to appear: it is time to permanently remove their genes from the human gene pool

actually,.......
[Read the article: WayLay]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I am the only sane person, left in this world.
Me, a semi-retired, COBOL loving, chess playing, Dungeons & Dragons playing, techno-geek, I am the only sane person.
In fact, the rest of you are illusions, mere shadows cast by me upon the cave wall, I am the only being of substance.

the cats that my family has had
[Read the article: The cat whisperer]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]my parents once had a cat that was part Persian, part Siamese, part horse, part dog and part something else. It enjoyed being groomed with a vacuum cleaner, it would get 'drunk(?)' on the salty water in which green olives are packed, it purred loudly when it was sinking its fangs and claws into an old boxing glove and it would frequently gallop through the house making as much noise as a herd of horses.
my sister currently has two cats: a older Persian and a younger tabby. The Persian prefers to stare at the younger cat as if to say that the younger cat does not bleong in the house, while the younger cat tends to gallop through the house like a cannon ball, the younger cat also likes to jump on my sister when she is wearing her bathrobe and then climb up my sister's back to crouch on her shoulder (my sister tends to like having kittens ride on her shoulder) and the younger cat will vault onto the kitchen counter whenever the kitchen faucet is turned on (flowing water fascinates this cat). I do not know if my sister wants her cats to be reeducated although I have advised her to start wearing a long leather coat in the morning if she can not persuade the younger cat to stop climbing up her back.

as a survivor of various academic wars
[Read the article: Professor Obama, I presume? ]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]what is the highest academic degree earned by Senator Barack Obama? the academic rank titles of 'lecturer', 'instructor' and 'professor' are tied to one's highest earned academic degree; the title 'lecturer' usually means that one's highest earned degree is a B.A./B.S., the title 'instructor' indicates that one's highest earned degree is a M.A./M.S., while the title 'professor' indicates one's highest earned degree is a Ph.D.; I have heard of a case where a faculty member was a tenured assistant professor for his entire academic career, he was never promoted because he staged a street theater spectacle during the 1980's that almost got him shot by the local police; usually, an 'instructor' is the lowest academic rank that will be tenure tracked; I have also heard of a case where some one with 'only' an M.A. was awarded the title of 'professor': he earned this title by establishing and running two academic departments, establishing the standards for a graduate level degree program as well as various community outreach efforts; he outperformed various people who had Ph.D.s and in the end, the rest of the university gave him the title of 'professor'.

a question
[Read the article: Ask the pilot]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]with the various USAF bases, the various Naval Air bases and the various Air Guard bases that are scattered around the USA, why can't the pilots of a plane that contains terrorists in the passenger compartment simply land at the nearest one of these bases?

another question
[Read the article: Ask the pilot]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]when my late father served as a fighter pilot in the USAAF, he carried his .45 pistol in a holster under his left armpit and, to the best of my knowledge, that pistol never 'accidentally' discharged in flight

Science fiction shows
[Read the article: Everything you were afraid to ask about "Battlestar Galactica" ]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Admittedly, my opinion of the Sci-Fi Channel version of 'Battlestar: Galatica' is heavily influenced by the insipid episodes from ABC-TV's version. The Sci-Fi Channel has done better but I have not been able to follow the series as much as I would have preferred.
As far as the current version of Battlestar being the smartest SF show on TV goes, I must differ. 'Babylon 5' will always be a contender for that title as will 'Star Trek: Deep Space 9'.
As for social commentary, though, Robert Heinlein's novels ('The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress', 'Stranger In A Strange Land') have more social commentary than anything yet seen on TV.
By the way, I think the movie adaptation of 'Starship Troopers' deserves to be ranked with 'Plan 9 From Outer Space' and 'The Horn Blows At Midnight' as a total waste of film and talent.
