Is a routine the answer? (Please excuse the rant.)

Ok, imagine that the old type A/B crap is really meaningful. Then, what we have here is a type B who has been a major screw-up recently (or has suffered an unimaginably bad string of luck.) She thinks that the key to overcoming this is to stop being a type B. Now, maybe I'm not being helpful here, but I just wonder if she is now being victimized by some self-righteous type A's who can't help but feel superior because their Blackberries have little spots on the buttons where their fingers have worn away the original finish. "Honey, you just have to grow up, stop being so immature and start managing your life better." Great advice. Except for the fact that that has not been her real problem. Her real problem is that her social, romantic and financial affairs are in complete disarray due to whatever has been going on. LW, the vacuuming is an escape fantasy. Your life is in chaos. But guess what? The type B is much better suited to dealing with chaos anyway! Instead of trying to change your essential nature, why not try to identify and avoid the types of mistakes that you've been making, and, in true Type B fashion, let the rest slide? Yeah, you've got to get the yard mowed sometimes. But there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to schedule when you vacuum or drink a fancy-ass cup of coffee.

As time-management Luddite and enemy of over-planning, I wonder how many others out there feel like they are being victimized by some colossal post-industrial conspiracy to make us all into the most efficient little drones imaginable. Why the fuck is everyone so concerned about efficiency? We need less efficiency, IMHO. Have average people been rewarded for the vast "increase in productivity" of the last 30 years or so? Why do we Americans continue to chase the carrot that dangles in front of us? Are we really that stupid? FFS, slow down and enjoy life. LW, are you really scheduling cups of coffee? Maybe if your company still had a decently equipped break room, you wouldn't have to.

Anyway, I don't think that you can find happiness by imposing organization on yourself. I think that you need to stop writing letters and making late-night phone calls and start taking two-days hikes without a cell phone. But they won't even let you take a dog, will they? Bastards.

Something you missed

God, I hope CT's advice was sarcastic. Maybe he's joining in with the LW's co-workers, come to think of it.

LW, when growing up, did you not learn that the world is full of ill-willed people? Did your mommy tell you that love conquers all and that bad people always get their just desserts? Wake up. The world is as filled with hate as it is with love. You hating hate will not change anything. All you are doing is making yourself unhappy. Wait, isn't the jerk next door the one making you unhappy? No, absolutely not. It is your continuing unwillingness to accept reality, to face up to the fact that the world is not the Barney & Friends place that you want it to be that is making you unhappy. Of course this guy is a jerk. An evil jerk. He's a lawyer! Didn't you know that practicing law guaranteed that you'd be spending most of your time with self-loving, inconsiderate, manipulative jerks? Hating a lawyer for being conservative and hate-filled makes no more sense that hating water because it's wet. You can't change this. All you can do is make yourself happy or unhappy. I'd go with happy.

Finally, on a practical note, you need to learn how good ole boys operate. Clearly, obviously, this guy is having a great time fucking with you. Your over-the-top emotional reactions are a great source of entertainment for him. Why don't you stop entertaining him? Better yet, what are his favorite sports teams? Which ones aren't doing well? Start wearing the "enemy's" gear whenever possible. Become an expert on how and why his teams suck. Talk incessantly about why they won't be getting better anytime soon. Don't get angry at absurd political comments. Respond with equally absurd, factually inaccurate comments of your own. Hasn't he read about how Condi is actually white, but had her skin permanently dyed to take advantage of the racial quota system? Does he know his most hated judge has been secretly treated for some kind of substance abuse problem?

I sincerely apologize for my derogatory comments about Ms. Rice. Clearly, she has done nothing to incur such a disrespectful slander. My only defense is that I didn't realize that race was absolutely forbidden as a topic for humor for right-thinking people. Even when being sarcastic. Must not touch the sacred icon!
