  • It's important to stand up and be counted

[Read the article: The filibuster fiasco]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

The Democratic party is demoralized. Those of us who are Democrats because we believe in the environment, a decent foreign policy, civil rights, and a woman's right to choose desparately need to know that those we elect to office are not spineless wimps. Right now we are feeling betrayed and scared. It would help to know that our representatives are willing to stand up an be counted.

  • Plan B over the internet

[Read the article: Vermont: Delicious maple syrup and Plan B for teens!]

I don't know why nobody seems to know this, but you can get Plan B from the Planned Parenthood of the Columbia/Willamette over the internet. No age limit and they guarantee to have it to you within 24 hours.

  • Hijabs and niqabs

[Read the article: The politics of veiling]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

What I see missing from most of the Western "wearing the veil can be emancipating" articles is the fact that this isn't about wearing the veil. This is an issue of choice. In the United State or Britain, a woman can choose to wear the veil. If she does so, that is her choice. But in many Islamic cultures (whether or not Islam requires it), she has no choice. That is the real issue.

I wish you would pick up and advertise the fact that Planned Parenthood of the Columbia Willamette will take phone orders for Plan B from anywhere in the country and overnight mail the pills. See their website. http://www.plannedparenthood.org/ppcw/online-health-center.htm I have posted this before.

  • A day of apology to Iraq

So, let's do it. Pick a day and start a movement.

  • Bush the Great Military Commander

[Read the article: Behind Bush's "new way forward"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

What George Bush wants more than anything is to be a great military commander. The day he landed on the air craft carrier in a flight suit was the height of his dreams and the very essence of his self image. He would like to see Napoleonesc statues of himself standing with his chest out and rows of medals. He dreams of being a military hero. This is who he wants to be. As a result he will always take the military option. He will always be susceptible to anyone who tells him that there can be a military victory. No one ever becomes a hero through diplomacy so he will always reject diplomacy as an option. It just doesn't work with his self-image.

  • ADHD pandemic

[Read the article: Worldwide ADHD pandemic?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

So, here is a different take. My daughter is 25 years old. That means that she was trying desparately to learn to read before ADHD or ADD were commonly diagnosed or treated. In fact, she is not ADHD. She is severely ADD. Yes, Attention Deficit Disorder can come without the Hperactivity. She struggled for years. She was tutored 12 months a year for 13 years. She repeated the second grade. She worked so hard it was painful to watch. Finally, when she was in the sixth grade, she was diagnosed with ADD. She was treated with medication. The difference it made in her life was miraculous. She has now graduated from college. She has learned how to control her medication to give her the greatest advantage and she has become a lovely woman in control of her life. Part of that control means controlling her ADD.

So, please don't throw the baby out with the bath. I read many stories from parents who "are afraid their normal but active" children will be medicated or from people who worry that they might have been medicated. But what is interesting about these stories was that their children weren't medicated. Nobody is forced to be medicated. And I have never heard of anyone being forced to continue on medication if it is not beneficial. But believe me, for those who need the medication, it is nothing short of miraculous.

  • Right wing propaganda

    [Read the article: Limitless wrongness]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I wish someone would notice the right wing spin on what is happening in Congress vis a vis the war. It is being billed in all the msm as "Democrats failing to..." Why not "Republicans blocking efforts to save the lives of our boys"? ... or something similar.
