Although, I have been in animal rescue for years, I have never been able to understand how someone can live with someone, name them, care for them (supposedly)and bring them to a kill shelter...too old, doesn't match the couch, boyfriend allergic. In fact, after years of animal rescue, I am no longer for democracy. I do not want people voting for me who are handicapped in terms of empathy.
I love the way the writer describes Harold anthropormophically to relieve guilt (bored, resigned, right,) but can't muster up any compassion in six months to not murder this bird.
I am vegan. The argument that animals should be treated well and then killed does not sit well with me. Eating meat contributes greatly to global warming, poverty, starvation, and unnecessary cruelty. Of course, none of those things are as valuable as the writer's tastebuds.
Yuk.
In case this has not been posted yet. You can adopt a Turkey and help the farm sanctuary at:
http://www.adoptaturkey.org/
It's only 20.00 and you get a pict and bio of your Turkey, You can also adopt a Turkey as a gift and that person gets the picture and bio. How cool is that?!
Maybe next Thanksgiving, Salon could interview the adopt a turkey people for their take.
Gidon Eshel is mostly vegan because he thinks that is best for the environment.

Here is a quote of his from the above article:
The bottom line is if you eat the mean American diet, then you are responsible for the emissions of an extra ton and a half of CO2 equivalent per person per year, as compared to a vegan who eats the same number of calories but derived only from plants.
Huh?
Another issue is that they are cruelly destroying stray and domestic cats in preparation for the Olympics. They gather them up and put two or three in cages that are the size of microwave ovens and leave them to die in some sort of camps for strays. They have also convinced people who own cats that the cats carry Sars and should be dumped in the street. I have boycotted China for years because of the treatment of labor in sweat shops. I have started a petition for the cats, but this doesn't mean I don't care about people. If you are interested in signing the petition, which is only to ask the mass media to report the story, please do so. Personally, I think that putting all the issues up front, Tibet, Darfur, Sweatshops, Human Rights Issues in their own country and animal cruelty, is important so individuals can understand the severity of the problems and take whatever action they deem appropriate based on an informed point of view.

Thank you,

I'm so glad that this article was written. One of the things that the Chinese are doing in preparation for the Olympics is rounding up cats and leaving them to die in small cages. Please sign this petition to get the information about this killing on the mass media.

And yes I care about people, too and yes, I am a vegan, so I don't see the US as superior in all aspects of animal issues. (Sorry just trying to head off the "rote" attacks on animal rights activists.)
Much of the initial coverage about Fort Hood turned out to be wrong. Is there anything wrong with that?
