Rescue Me--I came upon the show halfway into the second season, so I went back and watched the first season on DVD. What a pleasure! Although the show often pushes it just a bit too far, it always redeems itself. No other show makes me consistently laugh out loud and cry, all in the same episode. Plus, I love the characters.
I've only seen two episodes of this show, but I must say, they were pretty hilarious. Last night I saw the one where one of the guys is dating a transvestite, and through a complicated set of circumstances ends up punching her in the face. Two onlookers say, "Hey! That guy is beating up a chick." and the guy says, "No, No, it's ok. Really, she has a dick. She's a guy!" and the onlookers say, "Isn't that a hate crime? Yeah that's a hate crime! Let's get him!" And proceed to chase him through the city. Cracked me up.
I was so heartened to read this article. Finally, oh finally, people are beginning to question not only the morality but the legality of torture, secret prisons, etc. I have been in a state of shock as this country has embraced practices that seem to me to go against the very foundation of our beliefs as a nation. When Alberto Gonzales, he of the infamous "torture memo" was made AG, I nearly lost all hope. Yet it seems that perhaps people are finally coming to their senses.
Then I read these responses and got the same old sinking feeling I had during the last election season. Otherwise smart Democrats shooting themselves in the foot by quibbling over non-essentials. The issue here is prosecting those who purposefully disregarded the Geneva Conventions, NOT whether or not any of us like this Swift Boat guy. Everyone needs to focus on the BIG ISSUES (war, torture, spying) or else those issues will become moot as Republicans stand behind their man and Democrats squabble about associating with the less than honorable. Please, you are welcome to your views that this Cronin guy is a creep (I agree), but he is RIGHT on this issue and if he can get the ear of other creeps--creeps who would NEVER listen to the likes of us--and make them see the light, then more power to him.
I've always liked Marie Claire, but when I picked up the August issue (the first with the new ed), I noticed a change for the worse immediately. Here's one of the heads:
Perfect Jeans: They'll Make Your Ass Look Awesome!
Need I say more? Not a good sign.
In addition, they had a nice piece on the children who have become "night commuters" in Uganda, but had no information for readers who might like to help by donating money or time. What an opportunity for good wasted.
I also didn't see the part where the writer claims that Viera "opted out." I think maybe Broadsheet is just a little oversensitive about that. Instead, the article was about how Viera turned down jobs that were all or nothing, yet has not seen her career harmed in the long run. In my mind that's a really great thing! And I'm pleased to hear a CEO say they were attracted to a candidate who "has her priorities in the right place." That's terrific.
Now, to be snarky. I watched "The View" once and it had to be the wost show I have ever seen. A bunch of extremely irritating "hosts" talking over each other and their guests. Not funny, not insightful. At all. So to me, the real outrage is that anyone was willing to pay Viera 5 MILLION DOLLARS for such complete crap. Agh!
Guess my husband's a sex fiend. He was right down there at the birth of both of my daughters (actually, to an annoying degree--as that other poster said, buggger off, I'm trying to have a baby!). He also witnessed me nurse said girls. He also, over the course of the last 20 years has seen me pukey, booger-faced, stinky, cranky, sick, etc (yikes, I sound like a baby, but you know what I mean). Yet he still jumps my bones on a regular basis. Sounds like the good rabbi is too squeamish for his own good. After all, sex is sex! Gettin it is always a good thing!
With Lieberman a supposedly-proud Democrat for years and years, it makes me sick that he would accept the support of Republicans who clearly are simply trying to derail a real Democratic challenger--Lamont. As these same Republicans seem to be fond of saying, "Lieberman was the Democrats vice-presidential candidate only a few years back, for God's sake!" As such, he should see this ploy for what it is--an attept to keep control over the Senate, over the Democrats, and over Lieberman himself. EVERY single Democrat should censure Liberman for his selfishness and throw all their support behind Lamont. I plan on writing my Senators and Congresspeople (and Lieberman himself) as soon as I am finished with this post.
I thought this article was extremely well-written and thoughtful. Very well done.
