I've said it before, and I'll say it again. A number of your letter writers' suggest that the election in 2008 will change things, with the assumption that an election will in fact occur. They are ignoring the warnings of Rick Santorum and Michael Chertoff, amongst others, who are predicting a further terrorist attack on the scale of 9/11. With the executive orders in place, Bush would be able to declare a defacto state of martial law, and bingo, no election.
Paul Craig Roberts, former Reagan era lawyer and heavyweight, has suggetsed that within the year, the US will be a police state, unless immediate action is taken to impeach Bush and Cheney.
Are all of your readers blithely waiting for a terror strike (likely self-inflicted) that will be a prelude to dictatorship in America?
You need to address the topic of 9/11 truth Glenn. It is the one way to open the eyes of the befuddled masses, and prevent what is seeming to be more and more inevitable. Peace and truth...Roberts' article below:

The mendacity of Bush and his followers is plain for all to see. His lawlessness, and wish to be the ultimate 'decider' (read dictator) is also clear. The question is what, if anything, can be done to stop it?
Most Americans appear to lose interest when you talk about constitutional and legal matters. There is no emotional draw.
In order to motivate people into an effective opposition force, they need a emotional link, and the only realistic one is 9/11.
If it could be proven (and it can) that there was government complicity in the deaths of 3000 of their own citizens, the people would rally and oppose their masters.
We appreciate your continuing exposure of crimes and lawlessnes at the highest levels of government. I ask you to go one step further, to help foster a movement that will stop the precipitous decline towards a dictatorship with no rule of law. It seems in essence that this is what has happened anyway. The Congress is not impeaching, and Bush is getting away with essentially the powers of a dictator. There is little time remaining before he will have unlimited power.
As a New Yorker, I ask you to promote the cause of 9/11 Truth. The issue is not going away. You can only ignore the elephant in the room for so long. Add your voice to the many who are already speaking out. Magna est veritas...

It is apropos to mention the new Executive order signed by President Bush, which people suggest essentially criminalizes opposition to the Iraq campaign. The order seems to indicate that people who are active in some way in destabilising the government of Iraq, or the rebuilding of Iraq, can have their assets frozen or ceded to the state.
Given that you admit you are a skeptic of the war, and that the opinions expressed in some of your columns could be construed as possibly being destabilising to the situation in Iraq, does it concern you that you could now be a target of the administration yourself?
This most recent order seems to throw a rather large net over anyone who is a skeptic of the foreign policy of the US in Iraq. Is it not time to push for impeachment before the police state is complete?

Re:"Blocking Property of Certain Persons Who Threaten Stabilization Efforts in Iraq"
I don't mean to be a nag. You have studiously avoided replying to any of my previous posts.
I think the issue of whether you could be a target of the Bush's new executive order is quite significant. It certainly has a bearing on any controversial interview you might have with General Petraeus. (Please see my previous post for a link to a review of the order.)
Since it is evident that you follow the comment section quite closely, and seem to be selective about who you reply to, I am wondering how you decide to whom it is important to respond.
As I mentioned before, there are a number of elephants in the room that are hard to ignore. The fact that your comments could be self-censored due to new executive orders by the president, is an issue that I think would be important for you to address, so that your readers would know your position.
Hoping that you will reply... Magna est veritas...
I appreciate your candid response.
I understand that you have your own time constraints, interests, and issues that you believe are worthy of your attention. Suffice it to say that I believe you have an intelligent voice, and provide a breath of fresh air for people who have, to a great degree, lost faith in a functioning democracy in the USA.
Your suggestions are well taken, and in an ideal world, if one had time and ability, they could be pursued. My goal at this time is to encourage a grassroots movement of people who will look at active (or passive) ways of promoting positive change, and I believe education and understanding is the key.
You have an eclectic readership, and I am hoping to reach some of them, as well as yourself.
I understand that you may not wish to address certain issues. That is your choice. My queries are not meant to be intrusive or pressuring, rather simply to give an alternative perspective which people might not be aware of.
Again, thanks for your frank response.
In an earlier post I suggested that your voice is an important one in the movement for truth and justice. I think it is so. Your opinions on some of the topics I have suggested would be valuable, and I hope you will consider at some point voicing your thoughts. Thanks.
