For me, one of the big lessons here is that people still do not realize that domestic violence IS dangerous violence. "JUST" killing your girlfriend and her new boyfriend (or whatever authorities thought was going on in the first shooting) IS an indicator that you are an unstable, dangerous, and deranged individual. There should have been every reason to worry that such a person loose on your campus could potentially create more havoc.
Still, you really can't place so much blame on the university administration, they were probably all so shocked that they were doing doing the best they could in an awful situation.
Right, Clap your hands if you believe in fairies--
Where have you been, Walter Shapiro? It's not the last few days that magically turned level-headed political debate into nasty finger pointing. It's been that way from the very beginning!
That's what this study said to me, anyway. That and men who are not douchebags are seen as lesser men, and therefore paid less.
Pretty depressing stuff for a Monday.
This is a great piece- I would only add Samantha Bee to your list, this election has given her much more airtime at The Daily Show, and the show is much the better for it. Even fake female politicians are shining in this crazy campaign season.
Seriously?
aaaaaaaarrrrrrhghghgh
The Sunday NYT has lots of tone-deaf class snobbery, especially the Magazine and Style sections. I expect that is part of what appeals to many of us readers: we can simultaneously judge the snobbery and feel superior while still feeling that, since we recognize the problem, we are more elite than we thought we were.
What is interesting about the AK piece is the controversy this has caused. Pieces about lavish "eco-friendly" second homes or "economical" $100/person dinners go unnoticed, but as soon as a woman speaks honestly about her experiences with infertility, everyone jumps all over her. The comments at NYT are full of admonishments: she should have adopted, she should have given her money to African children, she is a rich racist bitch who doesn't deserve a baby.
I for one think that there are way too few narratives on infertility out there, probably because people fear this kind of backlash, and welcome this perspective on pregnancy, IVF, and surrogacy. Salon, how about a piece written by a surrogate?
