Obama should reply to Swift Boating
[Read the article: Barack Obama: "Committed Christian -- Called to Bring Change"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I'm in South Carolina. Obama is being Swift-boated here by rumors that he is a Muslim. I met someone just today who said he likes Obama, but will not vote for him for this reason. Obama should not make the mistake Kerry made by ignoring these rumors. This problem is not just here; it is spreading all over the Internet. Though I like to leave religion out of politics, there are exceptions to every rule, and this is one time when it is appropriate to publicly affirm one's religious affiliation.

Does God bless us when we do evil?
[Read the article: Rev. Jeremiah Wright isn't the problem]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]The Old Testament prophets essentially said, God damn Israel for not living up to her ideals of justice and compassion. I guess it's OK if words like these were spoken a few thousand years ago, but not OK if they are spoken now. Though I love the United States and claim it as home, I am fully aware that our country has at times done evil things deserving of God's wrath. We have supported genocide in Central America. We are responsible for 5 million Iraqis losing their homes and becoming refugees. We are responsible for the deaths of perhaps a million Iraqis. Our Congress has on numerous occasions cut off funding for needy children. Who could argue that God would bless America for these actions?

Enough of the Reagan Myth!
[Read the article: Why Ronald Reagan didn't completely suck]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I'm sick of hearing the myth that Reagan was a great president and Jimmy Carter was a failure. Consider this: the full flowering of what Reagan started is George W. Bush. I am unimpressed by the notion that Reagan didn't push his ideas to their extreme because he was wise. When he wasn't taking naps, he pushed as hard as he could. I know this is a minority opinion, but I believe we would have been better off with a full flowering of Jimmy Carter's policies. Take the energy crisis, for example. When Reagan came into office, he said, "Be happy. Don't worry about it." He took the solar panels off the White House. Look where we are now. With Carter's policies we would now have had a moral foreign policy. The genocide done by Reagan in Central America paved the way for the debacle in Iraq as well as a near total loss of American prestige worldwide. Reagan was an actor, a very good one. He put a smiley face on the destruction of the New Deal. He made it sound good to lavish riches on the super rich, while taking away services from disadvantaged children. Where is the greatness in this?
