Original article: Tease me

Thank you!

I have been so frustrated this season by the complaints of my fellow "Lost" watching friends. If the mysteries of the series are so annoying why did the detractors start watching the show in the first place? The critics are all a bunch of whiny Cliff's Notes readers. If people just want answers I'm sure that the entire series could easily be explained by one fifteen minute monologue and then we could all change the channel and watch some crappy reality show instead. Enjoy the friggin' journey people!

Even though you hope the movie does poorly...

Stephanie, you may have to resign yourself to the fact that most of the people in America (and the movie going public worldwide) are entertained by things that you just don't find that interesting.

The critical response to this film

I think that a lot of people are finally pulling out the knives with which they meant to cut up the first film in this series. Way back in 2003 when word went round that Disney was making a movie based on a theme park ride I personally knew many people who wanted to hate it. When the movie came out and was unexpectedly entertaining I don't think that sat well with the people who were poised to hate it. Pirates 3 is a flawed movie, but lots of worse films that make just as little sense, and are much less inventive, get a pass. Make no mistake, a huge part of why so many critics (and a lot of insufferable cineasts) don't like this film is because Disney made it and its so damn big. At the end of the day, though, much of the movies' failure is the result of too much ambition. Look I don't want to make the argument that critics are out of touch and if its popular its good, but this movie is not "Wild Hogs" okay. There are wonders in this film and it is the big summer ride, and if your too much of a snob to see it then who needs you.

No Joan, you WANT the gaffe to hurt him...

but if the Romney campaign has shown anything thus far it is an odd imperviousness to his own mistakes and flaws. Since day one columnists and talking heads in the media have been telling the American people why a Romney bid will be unsuccessful, and yet here he is today the leader in the Iowa and New Hampshire polls, and more and more those same critics are reluctantly beginning to admit that Romney is starting to look like the GOP front runner. Do not be surprised if this latest Romney mistake becomes a blip on the radar, the man is turning out to be much more formidable than anyone ever expected.

Conservative politicians children in the military...

Its not about left versus right, its rich versus poor. Wealthy people don't tend to join the military, and if you are a national politician you are probably doing okay. Its all well and good to point the finger at the Romney boys and call them hypocrites for supporting a war in which they are not fighting, but when a Democrat wins in 2008 (and unless they completely implode one of the Democratic candidates certainly will win) will everyone here be as willing to point the finger at the children of Democratic leaders who are not fighting when a Democratic president sends troops overseas?

Holly, your argument is unconvincing.

Yes children do go to war because their parents influence them to go, but only in those cases where the family has a long tradition of military service. Those families should be honored, but the reason they should be honored is that they are extraordinary. Outside of those instances where military service is a family tradition I cannot realistically imagine any situation in which a parent would be able to coerce their adult children into joining the military. And honestly, I don't see how anyone can realistically hold it against Romney if he didn't force his sons to join up at gunpoint. Romney made an ill advised comment, but the attempt to weave this into some larger narrative about Republican hypocrisy is simply overreaching. And of course the Romney sons didn't join the military because they were disinclined to go to war, that's why everyone who doesn't join doesn't join. If you expect the Romney boys (or anyone else) to admit that they didn't join up because they were cowards then you are stupid. If every person in America who at one time or another has supported the war effort in Iraq were obligated to send their children to war it would not just be Republican children over there. Holly, I have no doubt your argument is heartfelt, but the reality of the situation is simply more complex than you are making it out to be.
