...I'm curious about the recourse the victimized writers of Domenech's plagiarism may have, in the aftermath of his crimes.
And yes Ben, these are real CRIMES.
Perhaps there is no recourse for the college writings, but if he got a cent for any of the other articles, shouldn't he be paying the offended author back with interest? (Not to mention, shouldn't the duped publication be looking for retribution as well?)
How will Salon respond, since many if your fine writers find yourself the unwitting "rewardees" of Domenech's "imitation"?
My words are my currency. My words my most valuable bankable skill (and the only way I've even got a shot at living like a rich Republican.) I consider theft of my valuables a very very big deal.
Please keep us posted as to what legal ramifications will come of this. Or will Domenech have the luck of the Bushies and never have to pay for his transgressions?
(P.S....if I were the school, I'd revoke his diploma!)
We are raising a generation without ethics and it's got to be stopped somewhere. Salon, why don't you take the lead and pull out some big legal guns on this slug?
is that it actually provides very useful and correct information for teaching kids to avoid child molesters. Pedophiles often target lonely, isolated kids looking for a friend or, in particular, an adult figure. Both girls AND boys.
The tragedy is, in 1961, the "child molester" and the "homosexual" apparently and most erroneously were considered one and the same. Of course, this completely leaves out the pedophiles who use the exact same techniques to target girls...both small children and teens. Where is the warning film for girls, I wonder?
I imagine it involved admonishng girls not to wear short skirts or plunging necklines or lipstick.
They really didn't get it, did they?
Sad, sad, sad.
Hey Page, I'm a Salon regular reader and also Cesar Millan's co-author and one of his Dog Whisperer executive producers. And I am SO disappointed that you took the easy road and mistook for fact the out-of-context remarks written by Mr. Derr in his vitriolic and envious "hit piece" on a man I know very well.
I've included this information in a rebuttal for the New York Times, but here's the crux of it:
"Regarding the allegation that Cesar is sexist, Derr’s own stereotypes seem to have clouded his memory. I’m his co-writer, I’m female, and I’m a feminist. His wife Ilusion is my colleague and close friend, and she’s a feminist. And Cesar, former macho male from rural Mexico, is the world’s most unlikely feminist! Time and again, Cesar explains that the leader of a pack can be either a male or female. He continually credits his wife for opening his eyes to “the vital role that women play in our human existence.” Cesar believes that the lack of female empowerment is directly responsible for much of the instability we see in our modern world. During several interviews, he has spoken of his strong belief that we need female leadership to solve the world’s troubles. In his seminars, he suggests a woman would make a great president of the U.S. Our best-selling book (which it seems Mr. Derr has not read) contains a preface in which he and I explain how pronouns will alternate between male and female when referring to generic dogs and their owners – an idea we agreed upon together. And even more amazing, Cesar’s goal for when he’s in his 50’s (“because in third world country,” he says, “they only listen to maturity”] is to return to Mexico and create battered women’s shelters and begin an awareness campaign about violence against women and spousal abuse – something he witnessed first hand as a child and which deeply disturbed him. For a sexist, Cesar seems surprisingly concerned that women’s voices are heard."
Please, Paige, take the time to interview Cesar yourself. I'll even arrange it. And don't spread more slander about this unique, gifted, humble and compassionate man. In fact, a correction would be nice, too!
