is that people will be actively rooting for the bird flu. It pits some peolple's pocketbooks against other people's health.
It's just so disturbing that people will be actively hoping for others to become ill (and possibly die) so they can make a few bucks.
The semantic distinction (we're just betting on the probability of something happening)is a little too subtle here. The fact is, if you have money on bird flu in March, you're going to be hoping for bird flu in March.
It's unsettling, to say the least.
I with Cary that you need to tell her; however, I complettely disagree with the advice to do it during the wedding. There is some way you can tell her before this -- even if it's just prior to the wedding. Interupting the wedding will only humiliate the bride, your brother, your family and make you look like an ass to boot. But you should tell her.
I agree with everything in the article, but my main concern, as others have stated, is that someone will spoil the book for me, either inadvertently or out of simple malice.
Two years ago, it was Salon that spolied "Half-Blood Prince" when The Fix reported that there was an upswing in bets on a certain character's death from the town where HP is printed. I beleive the headline on the main page even contained this indirect spoiler.
I think this was the inadvertent kind, and not done out of malice, but who knows?
"Salon's new weekly feature, Re-Viewed, offers a fresh look at great TV shows available on DVD. These foreign gems, forgotten faves and more will carry you through the writers' strike -- and beyond."
Support the striking writers by not buying any TV shows on DVD until the writers get a fair deal. DVD residuals is one of the main issues of the strike (as is online media, so resist downloading shows as well until the writers are getting their fair share.)
