Civics 101

DANG! I missed one...

http://www.americancivicliteracy.org/resources/quiz.aspx

The Intercollegiate Studies Institute is a non-profit, educational organization whose mission is to instill in successive generations of students a better understanding of and appreciation for the values and institutions that sustain a free and virtuous society. Through its various programming and publishing elements, ISI annually reaches hundreds of thousands of individuals who are interested in obtaining a genuine liberal arts education both on and off the college campus.

Founded in 1953, ISI works "to educate for liberty," to nurture in future leaders an allegiance to America's founding principles - limited government, individual liberty, personal responsibility, the rule of law, the free market economy, and moral norms.

Those individuals involved in education are invited to take advantage of ISI's Membership program. In addition to a free journal subscription, members receive a host of benefits from ISI. To learn more, please visit www.isi.org.

Klein and his ilk remind me of Pappy O' Daniel's line from "O, Brother..."

[to his son, Junior]

"Thank God your mammy died giving birth.

If she'd have seen you, she'd have died of shame!"

I'm off to cook a ThanksGiving gumbo...

...and I may be a little bit "under the weather" to remember to do this tomorrow.

But one of the things I'm actually very thankful for, is this place, and Glenn's writing, and the work he does.

Thanks, Glenn!!

I'll probably be bitching (to myself) if you don't post tomorrow. But at least I won't tell you what to write about. ;-)

Happy Thanksgiving everybody!

Bush was never a Leader

He's just the guy who got pushed to the front of the mob.

@wbgonne

Would you mind fleshing out your concept of "extreme but temporary domestic security measures"?

Disclosure: My initial reaction is, Jeezuz, WTF is this person talking about?

Friday, November 28, 2008 09:20 AM

@wbg

Well, you and are differ considerably.

Far better, I believe, to have necessary and appropriate measures in place, and not to "let the terrorists win" via a post-trauma knee-jerk reaction.

That's leaving aside issues of the effectiveness of and necessity for the "extreme measures", the shifting of the security/civil liberties balance which occurs, the alleged "temporary" nature, the arguably ILLEGAL nature of such measures (inasmuch as they disregard existing legal frameworks) etc.

I could probably come up w/ a few more, but that's off the top of my head, and I'm sure you see my point.

Friday, November 28, 2008 12:52 PM

@heru

A serious question.

Are you Bucky1?

And I'll have to concur w/ More's thesis (apocryphal or not), that "silence gives consent".

Friday, November 28, 2008 01:14 PM

I can't answer for "some here"...

...and I generally try not to trouble myself about what motivates whomever to do whatever.

This is GG's place, but I don't think I'd be too out of line if I said that certain behaviors which can absolutely be considered to lower the general level of discourse are no good for anybody.

Petty personal squabbles are simply disruptive, and they are, fundamentally, an affront to everybody who comes in here looking for a reasonable discussion.

I think shartstain22% is a fucking abomination. But I don't attack it personally on every thread, regardless of the fact that I find its leavings personally repulsive.

You'd think Glenn having to step in and ask you politely, on numerous occasions if I recall correctly, to tone it down, would sink in eventually.

Friday, November 28, 2008 01:36 PM

The point is

nobody (but you) cares "who started it".

And now, lest I be rightfully accused of editorializing, I'm done with this topic.

OS!

Podesta, a former chief of staff in the Clinton White House, also said Obama would complete “virtually the whole Cabinet” by Christmas, and the new president’s team will reach beyond the Democratic Party.

There will be “multiple Republicans” in the administration,” Podesta said. “You’ll see them spread throughout the administration.”

sysprog

I'm unfamiliar w/ Tina Brown. Do you think she has any "clout"? I liked this bit, right before she went all ga-ga over Rachel

The Meet the Press panel...

...needs fewer "Washington insiders" and more genuinely informed outsiders. ...And for the top spot, how about going way outside the box? How about bringing in the cool forensic skills of a David Boies? Or the fresh intelligence of a web star like Josh Marshall or Glenn Greenwald? Or the political/policy smarts of a journalistic intellectual like the Guardian’s Michael Tomasky?

Monday, December 1, 2008 12:00 PM

@sysprog & Pierre

sysprog - the DMN blog!? Are you local DFW, or am I even more impressed by the depths of your immersion in the toobz?

Pierre - it all depends on your sense of humor. I find plenty of Greenwaldian LOL moments. Literally LOL. Sadly, those are terribly outnumbered by the GIHs (Greenwald induced headaches). But I'm a glutton for punishment.

Hooray Republicans! More tax cuts! Woohoo!!

The Fate of our Constitution rests upon...

Judge Vaughn Walker

Oral arguments in Walker's courtroom are scheduled for 10 a.m. PST on Tuesday. Threat Level will cover the proceedings live.

I Hope the Rude Pundit is correct

and OS really IS going to save us all

http://rudepundit.blogspot.com/2008/12/obamas-cabinet-choices-are-shut-fuck-up.html

but I doubt it. I'll just STFU and wait for OS to demonstarate his man-of-steel-like determination to implement Change by using a bunch of right-wing Washington retreads.

And Glenn, parhaps it's me, but I can't parse the timeline in this sentence.

Quinn was Legal Counsel to Al Gore -- who, during most of Holder's work on the Rich case, looked like he'd be the next President --and, thereafter, Quinn became Clinton's White House counsel.

Hadn't Quinn previously (not thereafter) been Clinton's White House counsel?

Tuesday, December 2, 2008 07:24 AM

And another thing

I find it very sad that the majority seem more nonplussed by the Rich pardon (I suppose it offers a chance to dredge up Clinton again)than his involvement in the Chiquita horror show.

The back/forth between GG & BooMan here

is definitely worth reading.

Just go with it, GG...

Adopt some relatively unknown yet deserving voice and turn them into an influential blogger.
