Sorry fot the O/T, but

it would be beneath Derbig himself for me to characterize this bit of news in the fashion I'd like to...

Suffice it to say, "It's about time"!

Part of the Problem

OK, I read this same AP blurb in the DMN this morning. And my initial reaction was along the lines of "frickin' Chinese, I guess THAT'S par for the course..."

The problem?

Well, I'm (gonna make an assumption here) somewhat more informed/outraged about FISA and U.S. Gov't trampling of civil liberties than the "average American". And I didn't immediately laugh out loud at the staggering hypocrisy. I still retain a little piece of whatever it is, that allows U.S. citizens (most people, I'd hypothesize) to view others quite differently than they view themselves.

I've been actively, consciously attempting to purge myself of that tendency. But it's still not gone.

Out, damn spot!

Glenn, I went back again, and listened, really listened, to your latest two interviews

So now I'll have to do the same with Ellsberg's.

I'll second those who bemoan the difficulty of paying attention to the audio while multi-tasking.

Excellent stuff. But I have a question.

You will occasionally say "Right", when you are clearly agreeing with somebody's answer, or concurring with their explanation. But I thought, during the Sirota interview, (unfair of me, but I've forgotten the point Sirota was trying to make - I remember I thought it was a bit of a reach) that your "Right" was closer to a sarcastic rejoinder than an assent. Am I way off?

I concur

w/ Jim Pharo.

Rovian tactics, for whatever reasons, seem to "work" remarkably well.

So adopt them. Taking the high road yields four years of wound-licking and post-defeat self-examination.

Obama's deftness

Glenn, everything you say here is true.

Obama, his campaign and many of his supporters think they are better off by rising above it. They're not John Kerry-like about attacks -- they're much better at aggressively engaging these sorts of attacks and mocking and dismissing them -- but they think they're better off not engaging in these attacks themselves.

And not only that, but I agree w/ it. 8')

OTOH, even though Obama has shown himself to be marginally superior at responding - the Press are who they are, and the Public reacts to the drivel in the same fashion as usual.

So we'll see how it plays out. I've seen this movie before, I'm afraid.

Arne beats the Comics Section every time

This makea me laugh. Thanks, Arne.

Geee, Sh**ter, my bad. Didn't know you were in the "intelligence gathering" business. It's not apparent; we see scant evidence you've ever accumulated any.

Don't get me going. I've predicted for a while, that there won't even BE an election this year.

And I have nothing to base that on except a vague awareness of just how far down the rabbit hole we've fallen.

I hope I'm wrong.

@ Derbig, Mona

In late, honest question. What exactly, was the damage that Hall did?

From Mona's Wiki link

After his death, his wife Joan said that he had begun to adopt strong feelings current at the time against the possibility of an emerging, militarized United States with a nuclear monopoly very early in his Los Alamos work.

I can certainly see how a rational person feel as Hall allegedly did.

Because...

...a rational person could quite easily arrive at the conclusion that the U.S as a lone super-power might pose a greater threat to the survival of the planet than that posed by the U.S. counter-balanced by, say, the Soviet Union.

He engaged in espionage, to all appearances.

I wonder (not rhetorically, I actually DO wonder) whether or not the world may have been better served by that fact.

'big

I wasn't trying to get everybody all riled up. Shit pops into my head and I type it down, sometimes. I'm not knowledgeable enough about history, technology, or intra-Statist relations to know the answer to my own question.

But I do know I don't trust the horde of blood-thirsty warmongering miscreants that constitute our merry band of elected representatives any further than I can throw 'em. And that feeling grows stronger every day.

Crap. Wrong word.

I'm the "miscreant". I was grasping for a word that meant something like "enemies of creation".

Oh yeah, he's the Chmn. of the Judiciary Committee. Out of his jurisdiction.
