@ bigguns, etc.

One of Terry Randall's children converted to Islam and wears hijab; the other, as someone pointed out, came out as gay. These two are the less screwed up of the bunch he adopted (I don't mean to say that being Muslim or gay is a problem) and appear to be relatively stable now...however naturally they are distanced from their father. In interviews they appear to acknowledge that he is seriously mentally ill. They show surprisingly little rancor in their statements.

I liked it.

huh...so one more

entitled, enraged, emotionally abusive and sexually abusive (groper) old pig is getting the send off, and doesn´t like it. No surprise! As others have noted here, narcissistic idiots rarely go quietly--it´s all about them, dontcha know. Not being around to be the center of the universe is the worst fate they can imagine, whereas the rest of us know that life goes on, and wish for the best for those who survive us. I have even observed dying people comfort their loved ones, rather than the other way around.

And he´s been riding his Holocaust survivor story long enough, methinks. It´s pretty clear from the way the letter was worded that this story has been the old turd´s excuse for being a lifelong asshole.

Cary´s answer is about as good as it gets...all you can do is be around, you can`t change him. But be there for your grandma and the other people who need you. They will need your help as he becomes more impossible, whiny, and demanding with each passing day.

interesting

the number of people here who just simply don´t want to believe this.

Stories like these have been verified, and Mariane Satrapi has spoken out about it, among others.

Millions of people, including women, can be--and are-- brutally tortured and killed under dictatorships such as Iran´s. Quit letting your biases get in the way.

I have absolutely no doubt that horrors like these exist in the world, and that they take place in Iran. That said, nobody on Broadsheet is calling for an invasion by the U.S. Get a grip. I suppose you all think Stalin was a good guy, too, just because McCarthyism was stupid?

Should we stay silent about atrocities for political reasons? Thats basically what you all are saying we should do.

I'm trying to picture

Condoleeza Rice, supposedly herself a Soviet expert, being able to even understand, much less write, something like this. She gave no indication of having the brainpower to think in such a complex way while she was Sec. of State.

It's kind of fun exercise. Scary, but fun.

the porn industry is ailing?

I had no idea.

I thought the recession was driving all the beautiful, educated, well-balanced young women into sex work, which somehow on this site has been twisted into a liberating Good Thing.

It wouldn't be BAD that intelligent beautiful women should be forced by economic desperation into sex work. How could it be?

After all, it's what the the men want, esp. men with money and such an ugly entitled attitude that they like to buy sex. Their interests matching up perfectly with the interests of feminism--that's happened before, right?

Extraordinary!

That is NOT what I said.

Read the post again, slowly this time. Use a dictionary if you have to.

I know it's tough but you can do it.

@ ides of march

Yes, I do think pregnancy should be covered...just pointing out that it ISN'T.....because it's not a disease, and is considered elective and preventable. So why cover IVF if the resulting pregnancy expenses aren't insurable? Isn't that kind of ridiculous? Shouldn't we cover the real needs of people before the designer high-tech fertility clinics for white suburbanites and wealthy Indian women who will be shamed for life if they don't produce a son? (The biggest customers of fertility treatment happen to be...rich Indians. In their grossly overcrowded country, they remain fixated on biological sons. Yes, the "fertility rights" issue is essentially a conservative dog whistle).

Congrats to acefsw--you nailed it square on the head. See my paragraph above.

It's not really about women and kids--this is about men and their "needs". Takes some digging to undertand that, though.

When you've built

your whole political career around telling other people to keep it in their pants, around telling others that the highest good is Puritanical self-denial and discipline ("we don't need no stinkin' liberal stimulus money")...then..

HELL YEAH, you should keep your own zipper zipped.

Everything else makes you a liar, a hypocrite, a sociopath of the worst order.

No pity for Sanford in these quarters.

I'll accept marital infidelity in a politician when he admits to being in an open marriage and says publicly that what goes on in his bedroom--and other people's bedrooms--is nobody else's business, and everybody needs to STFU. That would be clear, honest, and consistent with actions.

Then, if he flies off for a tryst, I'll still vote for him. Gladly.

Until then any self declared "conservative" who pulls this stunt is a pus filled boil on the ass of humanity. Seriously.

infertility

is not "an insidious disease". It's just not.

It's not a disease.

BTW my health insurer in the past had a pamphlet which excluded from coverage "pregnancy and other diseases".

Pregnancy isn't a disease, either.

Still, most basic plans don't cover the expenses incurred in pregnancy, since pregnancy isn't...um, you know, a disease.

It's also considered to be optional.

The childbirth isn't covered either.

Nor is abortion.

Why the hell should becoming pregnant in the first place be covered, when nothing else related to reproduction is?
