James Levy,
[Read the article: The amazing, unstoppable, incredible American consumer]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]well put. And I've been wondering the same things for a long time. I read in the WSJ some time ago that the average American had something like $32,000 in credit card debt. I suspect that a lot of people are just paying the interest on their debt, which, because of the way credit card companies have structured the interest rates, is more profitable for the companies than actually getting paid for the original amount that was owed.
I have NEVER paid one penny of credit card interest, and use my two credit cards, which I have had for more than 20 years, as cash substitutes. But I suspect that I am an exception.
I own a small business. Last year (2006) was a terrible year for my clients. A number of them went bankrupt, some of the left the field, many of them ran up credit card debt and raided their 401Ks. Keep in mind that many of them made more money in 2005 than they had ever made. We all know that good times and bad times don't last forever, but too many of us don't live that way.
I think the hangover and recover from this binge is going to be a horror.

Fear and loathing on the right.
[Read the article: Hillary Studies]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]The right's hatred of Bill Clinton was rooted in their fear of him. In other words, they did not fear him because they hated him, they hated him because they feared his gifts as a politician. The same is true of Senator Clinton. (Don't you just love the way all the so-called neutral pundits and journalists refer to the junior senator from New York by her first name, but the other candidates get respect titles of senator, mister, etc.)
I would love to see Senator Clinton take on any of the freaks in the GOP's line up, especially "Poon Dog" Thompson, who, for the life of me I can't figure out, somehow, despite his decades spent as a high-class pimp for large corporation and a skirt chaser of the highest order, can prance around with the title of conservative.

I do not hate this young woman.
[Read the article: We'll always hate Paris]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Hell, I have no idea which particular strumpet she is, and less inclination to find out. What I do detest is the constant coverage this celebrity (and others) warrent in our 24/7 celebrity-driven infotainment media.
Yesterday, WTOP News (103.5) which fancies itself the center of Washington DC's 24/7 news world, broke into programming with BREAKING NEWS!!! I'm thinking: The Drunk pardoned Scooter! or The Russians invaded Poland! Nooooooo, Paris Hilton was getting out of jail.
Salon, please STOP reporting ANYTHING on this young woman and all others like her. Let those who are interested dine at Faux News.

This isn't the last of the Sopranos.
[Read the article: "The Sopranos" goes dark]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]In late 1980, I came back to the states on leave. I had not owned a TV when stationed abroad, and although I had picked up bits and pieces of the Dallas saga, I had no interest in "Who shot JR?????" It is my understanding that during a later season, JR was brought back? Or the show was continued in some way with the JR character? The show was a money printing machine, and the network just couldn't let it go without wringing the last dime from the series.
The Sopranos have been obscenely profitable for HBO, and I find it difficult to believe that they will stop until this Jersey turnip is bled dry. I didn't watch any of the shows until about three seasons ago. I later went back and rented the first season, which was quite good with interesting writing and characters. I think the show is out of gas, but I understand that the new shows HBO has lined up have been panned by the critics. My money is betting that Tony, Carm, etc. will be baaaaaak.

Certainly,
[Read the article: My delinquent student loans are driving me crazy]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]this LW needs good advice on how to proceed. But she owes the money and she should pay the damn debt. She could lose her house AND wreck her husband's credit. Doesn't anything matter to this woman? I don't buy her BS that she's cleaned up. If she'd cleaned up, she'd be thrilled to pay the debt.
You know, when Bush and Cheney steal tax dollars and give them to their rich friends via means fair and foul, most Salon posters scream bloody murder. But when an individual steals from a business, well, it's not really stealing.
This week, I am sending yet another group of deadbeat clients to collections. I have learned the hard way that someone who wants to pay a debt, well, they PAY THE DAMN DEBT. I no longer give anyone any breathing room. No $$ = collections. After 15 years in business, it still shocks me to know that there are people who get up everyday and try to steal from other people. And they're not all in the Bush White House. Shame on this LW, and shame on my fellow posters who would let her off easily.
