WTF?
[Read the article: Al Gore wins the Nobel Peace Prize]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Gore made a movie about global warming. A movie that has been shown to contain terrible inaccuracies and draws unwarranted conclusions. Not to mention that it was boring as hell.
Even if the movie were accurate, considering Gore as a Peace Prize candidate would be a stretch. Given that it's not accurate, the rest of your article is irrelevant.
And spare me the, "Oh, Al. Please run for president" nonsense. We don't need another political aristocrat in the race. Especially one with the inflated sense of self-importance Gore has.

Martial Law
[Read the article: The conservative vision of America, by National Review]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]The day after the 2004 election I told a co-worker I believed that martial law will be instituted here before the next presidential election. I still believe that. Based on everything the Bush administration is doing to carry on their "war", both the one on terror and the one on individual liberties, I do not see them gracefully handing power over to anyone, especially a Democrat.
They have already tried, and thankfully failed, to rewrite California's election law to hand over the White House to a Republican. They have succesfully split the Florida Democrats from the national party. They have reengineered the primary process by frontloading the voting dates to ensure that an establishment candidate won't face a grassroots groundswell. If all of that doesn't give them the return they want they will just cancel the election.
This might sound like an extremist scenario, but the pieces all fit. I certainly hope I'm wrong.

Why I Think It's a Bad Idea
[Read the article: Genocide: An inconvenient truth]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]For one, as pointed out in the article, the Armenian genocide was not carried out by the currently instituted Turkish government. Passing such a resolution now is indeed just grandstanding by the Democrats in an attempt to damage the president. And I don't like the president.
Secondly, it does appear that the motive here is to curtail the military action in Iraq, an effort I believe should indeed be curtailed. Lacking the courage to directly confront the president, the congress is taking a backdoor approach. I see nothing courageous about this approach.
Thirdly, the congress has no Constitutional mandate to pass non-binding resolutions about hundred year old events. I looked, and didn't see that anywhere. We can't make up for our inaction then by passing toothless resolutions now.

"have a nice f@#$ing day"
[Read the article: AT&T, other telecoms, buy victory in lawsuits]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]"They are literally buying a judicial victory in Congress -- just like Carothers warned that third-world countries must avoid if they want to become functioning democracies under the "rule of law""
gee, when you put it THAT way it sounds kind of bad.....
Seriously though, what more proof does anyone need that the American Experiment has failed in its mission? We have progressed (?) from nation with intentionally limited and weak central government to one that has appropriated to itself powers rivallng the monarchy it revolted against 230 years ago.
I greatly appreciate Mr. Greenwald's writing on all of this, but I weep (well, not really) over the fact that the vast majority of the American citizenry is completely ignorant of it. When I read about the erosion of the Rule of Law here I wonder what the hell we can do about it. People I talk to literally shrug their shoulders; "well, what can you do?", "that's the way it is."
Or is it really too late?

New Rule
[Read the article: Congress to cave on spying, again]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]No more inane acronyms for proposed legislation. A simple, "A bill to define restrictions on the use of intelligence gathering in the domestic United States", would be so much more elegant. Those one word acronym/summaries do nothing but cover up the real intent of the bills, which is usually another step in the erosion of the Bill of Rights.

Other Offensive Team Nicknames
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Yankees - This is either a claim of Northern superiority to Southern culture, or an insult levied by a Southerner against a Northern-American. Either way, it's got to go.
Mets - originally derived from Metropolitan, thus excluding suburban and rural Americans. Out.
Cowboys - a group of people whose lives revolve around the forced incarceration and ultimate death of noble Bovines. PETA says change it.
Cardinals - ever notice how the cardinal depicted on Cardinal uniforms is male? Same for Orioles, Bluejays, Eagles, and Seahawks. No More Gender Discrimination!
Vikings - I have met people from Scandinavia, and none of them were wearing hats with horns on them.
Devils - John McCain says we're a Christian country. In that case, the Devils must be exorcised.
Look, if you were starting a brand new sports franchise you wouldn't pick Redskins, Wops, Coons, or Chinks as your nickname. We all know that. But, as others here have pointed out, it is far better to use these historical nicknames as opportunities to learn something about the alleged victims then to just change them and forget.
And you know, calling them The Phillies is downright insulting to their fans in Southern NJ.

Mel Brooks had the right idea
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]instead of being offended by words, ridicule the offensiveness out of them.
Blazing Saddles was at the forefront of this. Of course, if you see it on broadcast TV these days you wouldn't know it.

um, no
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]"Do some googling and find publications by Native American activists. It's not that hard to get the Indian perspective."
Not all Native Americans are activists. That's like saying that reading Mother Jones could give an Iraqi the American perspective.
And, truth to tell, they aren't even the "natives" in America. The real natives died off, or were eliminated by immigrants.

captain obvious
[Read the article: I'm dressing up as a melting polar ice cap]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]he's no funnier in print than on TV. nothing more than a Howard Stern for political hipsters.
