This election concerns issues, not personalities

Despite what the McCain campaign insists, this election is about issues, not personalities. It is fatuously self-indulgent to spill ink over Palin. McCain would be dangerous in office. Roe v. Wade is history if he is elected. The economy is heading into a depression that will last 12 to 18 months. The real unemployment rate is around 14%. The consumer is shopped out, debt laden and uninsured, as so that a few rich people can get richer.

McCain would increase the likelihood of a terminal nuclear war by following the Bush administrations determination to antagonize Russia and abandon arms limitation talks. This is to say nothing of doing nothing for the environment.

Please focus on the issues, assuming you know what they are, and assuming that you can focus.

Despite what the McCain campaign insists

this election is about issues, not personalities. Democrats who waste time on Palin are doing the bidding of the Republicans.

It is fatuously self-indulgent to spill ink over Palin. McCain would be dangerous in office. Roe v. Wade is history if he is elected. The economy is heading into a recession that will last 12 to 18 months. The real unemployment rate is around 14%. The consumer is shopped out, debt laden and uninsured, all so that a few rich people can get richer.

McCain would increase the likelihood of a terminal nuclear war by following the Bush administration's steadfast determination to antagonize Russia, install destabilizing missile systems in Russia's backyard and reverse decades of arms limitation talks in favor of a new arms race.

Add to that the Republican contempt for science, which includes hostility to stem cell research, evolution (not a matter of scientific debate at the level of molecular biology), and climate research.

I have omitted the assault on civil liberties such as the freedom of assembly.

No one has offered a convincing argument that Palin-tology deserves more than a fraction of the attention it currently receives.

Sleep disorders are real

I've had sleep apnea and chronic insomnia for years. I've lost jobs on account of an inability to maintain consistent hours. I've heard the standard moralizing from managers and others who don't believe that such conditions exist, or who have concerns about "morale."

I've had to get by with work that permit me to work on a manageable schedule. That means avoiding workplaces where employees are regarded as "troops" whose morale is at issue.

As far as the managers who wrote in suggesting the LW become his own boss and set his own schedule, that's a good suggestion. Unfortunately, the managerial mediocrity who wrote it could not resist adding that the LW would lose customers on account of his behavior. Managers who expect respect from their staff are deluding themselves if they cannot resist the temptation to be sarcastic (disclaimer: I'm a director myself.)

In my case, two visits to two sleep clinics did little except to confirm a diagnosis of moderate to severe sleep apnea. It runs in the family. A brother of mine was diagnosed with sleep apnea and had surgery. Neither of us is overweight.

It was years before I found what worked, after trial and error. First, I had to use a decongestant before bed. Second, I have to take melatonin. This has effectively eliminated my insombia. I have to take this one hour before going to bed.

You may also have to consider scheduling your creative work or even limiting this.

Of course

The typos in my previous post indicate that my sleep apnea has taken a cognitive toll. That, together with the natural deterioration of age is nature's way of preparing one for the end.

Take heart

Experience teaches that not a single one of the fatuously self-righteous minds not large enough to suffer fools gladly, who took the time to write to tell the LW to grow up are not grown up at all. The older I get the less grown up they seem. Where does it say that a grown up needs to derive satisfaction in berating others? Economic slaves enjoy doing this, apparently.

It's one thing to be reminded about a cultural norm; it's another to be berated by self-satisfied imbeciles. Life is too short for that.

If McCain/Palin get elected

when they start World War III, I hope that the Russians will have a sense of humor and bomb the red states first.

Some people should avoid posting letters

Indeed, it is unfortunate that Prof Ariely once suffered severe burns and has to be stigmatized by persons whose perfect, on-camera looks would no doubt withstand the most exacting scrutiny. Others find it inspiring that a facial difference hasn't stopped him.
