Gimme that old time irreligion

[Read more letters about this article: Here]Oh p-f'n-leeze. You may find it depressing that there is no afterlife, but that doesn't mean that there is one. Draw your conclusions about God or immortality based on the evidence, not on what you want to believe. Otherwise you are renouncing rationality just as much as the ignoramuses who want to teach the Bible in place of science.
I wish I was six inches taller and had more money. Should I just believe that I'm tall and rich, despite the clear evidence?
If you decide there is a God and immortality, make sure you can explain why you don't think there are:
many gods but no immortality (Romans)
many gods and immortality (folk Taoism)
one god but no immortality (early Jews)
immortality but no gods (early Buddhists)
immortality for some, not all (ancient Egyptians)
gods who exist but don't intervene in the world (Epicureans)
PS, a) Pascal's wager was *satirical*. If there was a God he would not be such a dolt as to fall for that little scam. b) Cary, sorry, but even if there was a God, your alcoholism or whatever it was would still have been your own responsibility. Plenty of atheists have gotten over addictions.

If you can't tolerate cultural practices different form your own, that's OK but you should stay the hell home watching I Love Lucy and eating Wonder Bread. This is why Americans have such a bad reputation for being privincial and arrogant.
